Premier League team Crystal Palace is making rigorous efforts to stay afloat in the top division, following an 11th-place finish last season. Currently, they are in the 15th position, five points above the relegation zone, which comprises the league’s bottom three teams in the standings.
Amid the ongoing challenges, their head coach, Roy Hodgson, has been dismissed due to health issues that forced him to leave his role at Selhurst Park Stadium. In response, Crystal Palace has appointed Austrian manager Oliver Glasner as their new boss, following long-speculated reports.
Oliver Glasner takes on Crystal Palace’s new head coach role
The Eagles have appointed Oliver Glasner, the former Eintracht Frankfurt’s Europa League-winning manager, on a reported two-year deal to replace Roy Hodgson at the London club. The agreement between the Austrian and the Premier League side is already in place and is subject to contract review.
Glasner had emerged as the top candidate to replace the 76-year-old veteran manager, who was the oldest serving head coach in the English Premier League. The Austrian, who had previously been in charge of a Bundesliga outfit and guided them to European glory, has been out of work since last summer.
In March 2023, Roy Hodgson marked his return to Crystal Palace for his second managerial stint at Selhurst Park, later signing a one-year term intended to keep him with the club until June 30, 2024. However, due to medical reasons, his contract has come to an early conclusion.
Hodgson recently took charge of his 200th game as Palace’s manager. Earlier this week, his side suffered a 3-1 defeat at home against Chelsea. This loss, fueling upset among the fans, led to calls for his sacking, especially after delivering impressive results last season.
Roy Hodgson taken to hospital after his dismissal
Crystal Palace called off the scheduled press conference where the English manager was set to address the media. However, the club shared that the 70-year-old had taken ill during the club’s morning training session on Thursday.
Shortly after, the Eagles released an official statement regarding their manager’s condition, updating that he is in stable condition.
The statement read, “Following the news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today’s training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in the hospital.”
“Everybody at the club sends their best wishes to Roy for a speedy recovery,” wishing fast recovery, on X, formerly known as Twitter.
