One Conor McGregor action earned him warning from Vladimir Putin’s entourage at 2018 FIFA World Cup

Conor McGregor, the man behind the popularity of MMA, in the recent past, announced his interest in becoming the President of the Republic of Ireland. McGregor was embroiled in the recent political turmoil in the country with his controversial tweets.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 but it has not provided the desired result for either party. The war has been going on for two years even though overwhelming sentiment about the matter is against Russia.

Conor McGregor action in Vladimir Putin meeting earned him warning

Even before McGregor had political ambitions, he met one of the most powerful political figures in the world, Vladimir Putin, when Russia hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The Irishman met Putin months before his highly anticipated lightweight title bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

Mystic Mac, the former two-division UFC champion, was invited by Putin, and videos of their interaction circulated on social media. In the footage, McGregor can be seen engaging with Putin through a translator, and they exchanged handshakes and embraces during the meeting with the Russian President.

Nonetheless, Putin’s entourage which comprised of his security personnel did not like what McGregor did. They were seen very upset about the Irishman having an unannounced interaction with the Russian Premier.

McGregor would later use this interaction in his trash talk with Khabib Nurmagomedov, stating that even Putin supports McGregor. However, Nurmagomedov, along with his father, would visit Putin at the Kremlin palace soon after his title triumph over McGregor.

McGregor’s encounter with Putin landed him in hot waters with Ukraine

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently expressed his dissatisfaction with Conor McGregor in a meeting with Irish politicians, Sean O Fearghail and Mark Daly. The meeting was about the Russia-Ukraine war but the Ukrainian President made sure to let know of his displeasure at McGregor’s past appraisal of Putin.

The Russia-Ukraine War led to the UFC initially imposing a ban on flags, which was later lifted by Dana White. McGregor, in the past, has tweeted praising Putin as an exemplary leader, a sentiment noticed by Zelensky. Additionally, during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, fighters took sides and engaged in online disputes over their respective views.

Sean Strickland and Belal Muhammad expressed differing views on the conflict, with Belal, a child of Palestinian immigrants, facing criticism from Strickland on X. UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi was the hotbed of Palestinian advocacy as Islam Makhachev, Khamzat Chimaev, and Muhammad Mokaev among others voiced their support after their respective victories.
