Todd Boehly made history when he bought Premier League giant Chelsea in 2022 with his American consortium. Since then, he has spent more than £1 billion on just transfers in the past three transfer windows and brought in a lot of players for big sums.
However, it has not worked out well for the American businessman and his new team. He had to fire two managers since and is seeing his team at 10th currently. It seems that his project in England is not working out well, and now he is targeting another one.
Mauricio Pochettino’s advice to Todd Boehly
Recently inaugurated Argentina president Javier Milei stated that Todd Boehly and his consortium are looking to expand into his country. Boehly already owns Strasbourg in France and is looking to acquire more. Milei said that both Boca Juniors and Newell’s Old Boys are possible clubs that Boehly can invest in.
He said that this is part of his plan to revitalize the economy of Argentina, which has fallen into much squalor. After winning his election, he said both Chelsea and some Arab groups could invest billions of dollars into their nation’s clubs. It could also help Chelsea a lot as they can get some top talents from the nation more easily.
While Boehly can look to buy a club in Argentina, his team’s manager Mauricio Pochettino isn’t convinced. He believes the fan culture is different in Argentina, and they may not want to be under new owners.
He said, “It’s so difficult because Argentina is a country where it is not normally like here, where people arrive from outside and buy clubs. The fans, they feel they belong to the club and the club belongs to them, and it’s not easy to change the mentality. Maybe in time, yes, but at the moment I don’t believe it is going to be easy to buy a club there.”
