Over five months after undergoing elbow surgery, 49ers star Brock Purdy makes exciting return to NFL gridiron for preseason game

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback situation became more complex lately as their signal-callers Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold are all engaged in fierce competition to earn the gig. While Darnold, not Lance, appeared as the team’s second QB as the latter struggled miserably during his start in the preseason opener, Purdy’s impressive performance last season will likely keep him ahead of all others in the race.

Brock’s injury from the last season had been a headache for the franchise, albeit the young star had a strong answer for the doubts by once again breaking out in their latest preseason match, solidifying his position in the team to command a promising roster of playmakers in the upcoming season.

2022 breakout star Brock Purdy returns to action in the 49ers’ preseason matchup

Amid much speculation, Purdy started Sanfransisco’s Saturday preseason tilt against Denver Broncos. Though he didn’t play much in the game, he managed to complete five of six pass attempts for 65 yards and ensured his only carry for eight yards.

After having a phenomenal run late last season, the second-year veteran looked promising this year as well. He also paved the way to a 25-yard gain for the 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The signal-caller incredibly ran the offense and was 4 of 5 for 65 yards with a rating of 118.8 before getting benched for the rest of the match. He also avoided a potential sack in the red zone.

Besides his outstanding performance, the Iowa State product’s play at pretty much all the preseason matches already looks positive for San Francisco as he could be the key to ensuring Kyle Shanahan’s offense looks exactly like the coach wants it.

What was Brock Purdy’s surgery?

Purdy suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow during the first quarter of the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 29 and the swelling in his elbow didn’t initially subside, delaying the initial timeline for his surgery further.

The 23-year-old underwent successful surgery on March 10. The 49ers later disclosed that the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister conducted an internal brace repair to the quarterback’s elbow. His expected recovery period was six months and he was projected to start a throwing progression program in three months.

Despite being limited to two days on and one day off during the 49ers’ training camp, Brock has already showcased enough potential to earn the trust of the San Francisco-based team following his magnificent performance in the last preseason match.
