The Panthers also took a decision to activate the fifth-year option on cornerback Jaycee Horn, as reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. Exercising the fifth-year option will cost them approximately $12.4 million for the next season. This move solidifies his presence in the team’s defensive lineup through the 2025 season.
The decision to activate the fifth-year option was influenced by the Panthers’ draft strategy, particularly their selection of cornerback Xavier Legette in the first round. Trading picks No. 33 and 141 to acquire the 32nd overall pick enabled the Panthers to secure Legette, according to ESPN.
Jaycee Horn’s journey in the NFL
Jaycee Horn is the eighth overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2021 draft. He entered the league with high expectations. However, his path has been hindered by injuries, limiting his playing time to just 22 out of 51 possible games over three seasons. He played in only six games last season as he sustained a hamstring injury.
However, the cornerback has shown flashes of brilliance when healthy. He totaled 27 tackles and five passes defended last season. The young star recorded 85 tackles, 60 solo tackles, four interceptions and 13 passes defensed in 22 starts in his three years in the league.
The Panthers are now banking on Horn’s talent and resilience as they have decided to navigate his injury-prone start to his NFL career. With proper support and management, there is optimism that he can overcome these challenges and fulfill the promise he made when he was drafted.
