Former player and NFL pundit Pat McAfee has climbed up the ranks to emerge as one of the top voices in the football world in the past year or two. With millions of people tuning in to his program every day, he is undoubtedly gaining traction as an opinion leader.
However, with great power comes great responsibility. That is probably a lesson Pat McAfee will have to learn the hard way after he made an insensitive comment that irked hundreds of people on social media. Let’s find out more about the fiasco.
What did Pat McAfee say about MLK Day?
Martin Luther King Day is quite an emotional moment for the majority of the population of the United States, especially for the African-American community. That is probably why McAfee decided to address the occasion. However, he made a grave error by making the day all about himself in the process.
On his own show, McAfee, who has already been a part of controversies before, made a few comments that hurt the sentiments of many people listening to his show online. According to the Daily Mail, he said, “He had a dream and I think LANK was one of the closest we’ve had to potentially that dream coming to fruition. So let’s realize that as we look around and realize that we’re maybe more close than we’ve ever been.”
He continued, “And there’s an election about to take place next year where we need to remember that we are more close than we have ever been… now, as somebody who was cancelled by both parties last week, both of them cancelled me. Two political parties canceled me last week and we are still alive. Let’s remember we don’t need the outside noise. All we need is a little bit of love,” relating the occasion to an incident where he was cancelled.
NFL community harshly reacts to Pat McAfee’s controversial remarks
Naturally, this comment led to widespread backlash from the NFL community. People from all walks of life rained down an unending barrage of abuse on the host.
One comment probably summed it up in the most concise manner, saying, “This dude is a clown,” while another quipped, “I swear Pat McAfee goes from cool guy to the absolute worst on the daily.”
Some others were more pissed about him making the celebration all about himself instead of the great Martin Luther King Jr. The user said he was “the only man who could twist MLK day as a celebration of himself,” citing displeasure at his actions.
