Though NFL GOAT Tom Brady has boldly labeled Bill Belichick as the best head coach of the league, the New England Patriots’ recent struggle says something else. The HC earned multiple Super Bowls during his more than two-decade coaching career, although the spark simply disappeared following the 2020 season.
Now, the Patriots are one of the most devastating teams in the league, with a 2-8 record. Besides criticism about Belichick’s coaching strategy, the team’s quarterback room has also been a focal point of discussion due to its repeated failure to score lately. As they are going to face off against the Los Angeles Chargers in the upcoming game, the HC seemed to have a mysterious plan regarding QB1.
Bill Belichick maintains suspense on starting QB for Patriots
The Patriots offensive struggle has been noticeable throughout the season. Their starting quarterback, Mac Jones have been frequently benched by Belichick. Bailey Zappe filled his spot for a while in those campaigns.
While talking about who will start in the week 12 match, Belichick said he told all the signal-callers to “be ready to go”. Jones, Zappe, Will Grier, and Malik Cunningham are all members of the team’s quarterback room.
“I told all the players the same thing: be ready to go. Hopefully, they will be,” he told via Pats Pulpit.
In his eight-minute press conference, the HC remained tight-lipped about the potential starter and said he would reveal the final scenario of the QB room on Sunday. Meanwhile, Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was earlier spotted losing his cool with Jones on the sidelines. He also kept the situation in suspense, saying the decision about the starter would be based on this week’s practice.
The OC didn’t shed light on the idea of a potential competition among the dual-threats, but he revealed both Zappe and Grier rotated in with Mac during their practice last Wednesday.
Fran Levy unleashes criticism on Bill Belichick’s future
Many outlets have been reporting since the last few days that Belichick might be sacked amid the regular season, like the Las Vegas Raiders did to their coach Josh McDaniels days ago. The Pats’ coach reportedly needed to clinch victories over the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders to avoid losing his job, but he lost both campaigns.
Meanwhile, Fran Levy, the wife of Buffalo Bills former HC Marv Levy, slammed the 71-year-old coach, saying “he should retire” during an interview with The Boston Globe last week. She boldly stated her resentment towards the veteran while labeling him a “cheater” and “rude”.
“I can’t stand him. He’s a cheater and he was rude to Marv. Bill Belichick was always jealous of Marv. He’s a mean person and I hope he never wins again.”
In the interview with her husband, Fran said she never minds taking stands when it comes to her husband. However, Levy didn’t agree with his wife’s statement, saying, “I’m going to have Fran run some extra wind sprints for saying that!”
The ex-Bills coach said when he retired from the league in 1997 after leading the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls, he regretted his decision. However, he also mentioned that he was “too old” to work for any franchise at the time.
