City have been searching for midfield reinforcement since the hamstring injury of Kevin De Bruyne, sustained on the season’s opening day. With De Bruyne out for at least six months and City with few midfield options, Matheus Nunes has been identified as Pep’s prime target this summer.
Initially, the transfer of Matheus Nunes was somewhat uncertain. Earlier this week, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil said that he expected Nunes to remain at Molineux. However, an agreement has now reportedly been struck between the clubs for the Portugal international.
Pep Guardiola hails Matheus Nunes
Pep Guardiola has been a big fan of Matheus Nunes since his Sporting CP days. In an encounter at the Champions League, Matheus Nunes demonstrated his ability despite losing miserably to Man City.
City were comfortable 5-0 winners in the first leg of the round 16 tie, but Pep was so impressed with Nunes’ performance that he said;
“Sporting is a fantastic team, they are the champions of Portugal, which has a firm league, with FC Porto and Benfica, they change the ball well, they have fast and intelligent players.”
“Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today. Despite the difficulties and mistakes, I have to be very satisfied because we took a big step towards the next round,” he added.

Matheus Nunes set to join Man City on €55M deal
Manchester City are reportedly very close to completing the signing of Matheus Nunes from Wolves. Man City suffered a big blow at the start of the season when Kevin De Bruyne picked up a hamstring injury in the match against Burnley. Since De Bruyne will be out for months, Man City had to move swiftly. Matheus Nunes is now expected to hold the fourth, alongside Mateo Kovacic, till De Bruyne returns to the squad.
On the other hand, Matheus also looks keen on the transfer. He has only spent a summer in Wolves after a £42 million club-record deal was agreed upon with Sporting. Because Nunes is trying to force a move to Man City, he has not reported for Wolves’ training since Sunday and has made it clear that he wishes to leave.
Wolves have been constrained by financial fair play regulations, which played a role in Julen Lopetegui’s departure as manager. However, they can now welcome their first signing of the summer. In a separate and unrelated deal, the two clubs have agreed a loan move for City youngster Tommy Doyle
Also, It is reported that the Wolves are now close to announcing the arrival of the Girona center-back Santiago Bueno. Wolves looked to the 24-year-old Uruguayan international to reinforce their choices in the center-back position following the departures of defenders Nathan Collins, Conor Coady, and Dion Sanderson.
