Piers Morgan has consistently been a prominent critic of radicalism in women’s football. His disagreements with Meghan Rapinoe are well-known, and he has been vocal in response to Rapinoe’s radical statements following her retirement from the USWNT.
While Morgan’s opinions are often in the minority, this time his criticism of Mary Earps’ perceived undeserved BBC Sport Personality of the Year victory finds support from notable figures like Joey Barton and others.
Piers Morgan unimpressed with Mary Earps victory
Piers Morgan and other critics have voiced complaints after Mary Earps won the BBC Sport Personality of the Year award. Fans have questioned why the Lionesses goalkeeper claimed the prize, citing that she “didn’t win anything” with England.
The Lionesses goalkeeper was considered the overwhelming favorite of the BBC Sport Personality of the Year on Tuesday night, thereafter receiving the annual award in Salford, following in the footsteps of tennis star Emma Raducanu and England teammate Beth Mead, but Piers Morgan and several other critics did not consider this a fair assessment.
Mary Earps, a member of England’s triumphant Euros squad in 2022, played a significant role in helping the Lionesses reach the final of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Despite her contributions to England’s impressive World Cup run, there are dissenting opinions, including from Piers Morgan and the legendary Joey Barton, asserting that the Lionesses’ star should not have received the award.
Joey Barton delivers hot take on Mary Earps win
Joey Barton criticized the decision to crown England goalkeeper Mary Earps as Sports Personality of the Year. In his latest social media ‘rant’, the former footballer claimed that he would score “100 out of 100 penalties” against the goalkeeper.
Joey Barton spoke his mind on the matter saying,
“So the best sports person this year is… A Women Goalie.”
‘Lost in a couple of finals this year. Not won a sausage. So popular that Nike didn’t even sell a replica jersey before tournament. You telling me all those who jumped on that bandwagon, haven’t voted in the BBC nonsense?, Good luck to Mary. Hope she makes a few quid.”
Joey Barton furthered his criticism of Mary Earps, suggesting that the Sports Personality of the Year award should have gone to horse racing legend Frankie Dettori or snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan instead.
“To win before Ronnie O’Sullivan and Frankie Dettori…? Well, that’s just madness to me. Both almost genius like in their respective fields. They’ve lost to a big sack of spuds that plays in goal for a girls team,” Barton added.
