Manchester United’s season has gotten off to a rather bad start, winning one and losing one in their two opening games of the season. The on-field results are the least of the club’s problems however, as they still appear to have fringe players that they’re finding challenging to offload, which has affected the club’s ability to sign new players.
The club may have signed three players this summer, but as evident in the first two games, a strong backup for Casemiro, when he’s not at his best, could help the squad a lot, but such a move can’t be made unless they get rid of at least another midfielder.
Manchester United could face tense Varane showdown as transfer window closes
Raphael Varane signed for Manchester United in 2021 with a four-year contract, but recent reports of a potential move to the Saudi Pro League have cast a shadow over the defender’s United career. The French international is one of the highest earners at United but may be tempted by a bumper contract offer from the Saudi Pro League.
Varane still has two years left on his United contract, and his camp has made it clear that he (Raphael) plans to see out his contract, but players are known to go back on their words owing to different reasons, like what Benzema did with Real Madrid when Al-Ittihad offered him a lucrative deal.
A big-money move for Varane to Saudi Arabia cannot be ruled out, but it would be a massive blow to Manchester United if he were to leave so late in this transfer window. The transfer window is less than a week away from closing, and if Varane were to leave the club, he would be hard to replace as it’s not always easy to find potential replacements in the transfer market and could lead to a panic buy, which doesn’t always work out.
United’s pursuit of Amrabat hits roadblock
Manchester United will probably struggle this season without another holding midfielder, as seen in the team’s opening two games in the Premier League. Casemiro’s performance last season has seemingly caught up to him, with the former Real Madrid powerhouse struggling to find his best form.
Sofian Amrabat has long been identified as a potential target for the Red Devils, but a lack of movement in the outgoing transfers within the club could lead to Amrabat not coming to United this summer.
United are trying to offload Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay, using the money to fund a move for the Moroccan international. However, it remains to be seen whether United can offload the pair before the transfer window closes, leaving Amrabat’s transfer in limbo.
