Is there a debate in the world more opinion-dividing than the Ronaldo-Messi GOAT debate? Someone once said if you wanted to bring out the worst in men, ask them who was the better footballer between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and watch them go off the rails.
This debate has been at the summit of world football for over a decade, even before Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid. Footballers, past and present, have always given their opinions on who they think is better between Ronaldo and Messi, and Real Madrid legend Zidane is no exception.
Patrice Evra reveals Zidane’s controversial opinion on Ronaldo vs Messi
Patrice Evra played with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United before the latter joined Real Madrid in 2009. The pair won several Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2008 in Moscow. Evra has always spoken glowingly of Cristiano Ronaldo, whether about his drive as a passionate footballer or his goal-scoring ability.
The former Manchester United left-back has now revealed Zinedine Zidane’s opinion on the Ronaldo-Messi debate. “When Ronaldo signed for Madrid, Zizou said Ronaldo is better than Messi and even himself (Zidan),” Evra declared in an interview with Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast.

Evra left United in the summer of 2014 to sign for Juventus despite signing a new contract months before. The former United left-back explained that the decision to move to Italy was his wife’s rather than his, and he was just trying to make the best decision for his family. The former French international won several trophies at Juventus and even reached the final in 2015, losing to a Barcelona team that completed the treble that same year.
When did Ronaldo arrive at Real Madrid?
Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid months after losing to Barcelona in the Champions League final in 2009. The Spanish giants paid a then world-record fee to snap Cristiano Ronaldo away from Manchester United, unveiling him in front of a sell-out crowd of 80,000. It remains the biggest unveiling in the history of football, and fortunately for Madrid, the deal paid off.
During his time with Los Blancos, Ronaldo became the club’s record goalscorer, scoring 450 goals in 438 appearances. He also lifted the Champions League on four occasions and established himself as one of the game’s greatest players, rivaling Lionel Messi on a weekly basis in La Liga.
Cristiano Ronaldo now plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League after leaving Manchester United on a mutual agreement to contract termination.
