Rodrygo is one of the new breeds of talented soccer players. The Brazilian can do it all – score goals, create assists, and even keep the fans entertained by providing a show on the field with his dribbling skills and blistering pace. In fact, he’s what one would call the ideal player for a modern-day team, especially in the current Real Madrid setup.
Having achieved everything he’s accomplished at the young age of 22, Rodrygo obviously has people who are envious of his success, some of whom have resorted to racist abuse to try and get under the young star’s skin. The Brazilian recently detailed his experience with racism on social media after a recent loss.
Rodrygo talks on racist abuse
The drama that happened during Brazil’s high-profile clash with Argentina a few days ago in their World Cup qualifying game didn’t just end on the pitch. After seeing the match delayed for almost 30 minutes due to issues in the stands between both sets of fans, and even Brazilian police, Brazil went on to lose the match, courtesy of an Otamendi winner scored just after the hour mark.
This condemned Brazil to another loss to continue their miserable run of form. Sadly, after the game, Rodrygo, who had an on-pitch altercation with Lionel Messi, received several racial slurs on social media, something he quickly moved to denounce.
“Racists are always on duty,” the Brazilian posted on his social accounts (Instagram and Twitter). “My social networks were invaded with insults and all kinds of nonsense. It’s there for everyone to see.”
“If we don’t do what they want, if we don’t behave as they think we should, if we wear something that bothers them, if we don’t lower our heads when we are attacked, if we occupy spaces that they think are theirs alone, racists take action with his criminal behaviour. Their bad luck. We will not stop,” the Real Madrid star added.
Vinicius Jr., who knows a thing or two about being a victim of racism, quickly offered his support to his teammate by retweeting, “We won’t stop!”
Rodrygo’s rise to fame at Real Madrid
Real Madrid invested €45 on Rodrygo to bring the youngster in from Santos in 2019. Initially signed for the future, Rodrgyo briefly played for Real Madrid B before being promoted to the first team.
The Brazilian marked his debut for Real Madrid with a goal against Osasuna in September 2019. Rodrygo’s introduction to the first team was seamless, with the Brazilian quickly scoring a hat-trick in the Champions League against Galatasaray in November to make him the second youngest ever player to do so.
He claimed the La Liga title in his first season at the club. The former Santos youngster has scored some vital goals for Real Madrid in the Champions League, especially against big teams. He scored the winner in a 3-2 win over Inter Milan in the 20/21 season before scoring a volley against Chelsea the following season to help Real Madrid triumph over the Premier League club.
He also scored a brace against Manchester City in the UCL to help set up an extra-time win for the Los Blancos last year. His efforts earned him a cult-hero status amongst the Real Madrid faithful.
The club also rewarded him with a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.
Rodrygo was seen partying with Mbappe a few months ago, giving everyone hope that the Brazilian was playing a super-agent role to help bring the Frenchman to Real Madrid.
