Former USC Trojans standout Reggie Bush has reason to celebrate as he is set to reclaim his Heisman Trophy. Bush, who originally won the prestigious award in 2005 for his outstanding performance on the field, was forced to relinquish it in 2010. He has become the first recipient to do so.
Over the years, there have been calls from various players, including Johnny Manziel, advocating for Bush to have his Heisman Trophy reinstated. Their voices were finally heard as the Heisman Trust announced its decision to return the trophy to Bush.
According to ESPN, Michael Comerford, president of The Heisman Trophy Trust, explained that the decision to reinstate Bush’s Heisman followed a careful evaluation process. During this process, the Trust closely observed the significant changes occurring in college football.
“We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments. We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back.”
Upon hearing the news, the former USC Trojans player took to Instagram to express his gratitude, posting a photo of his Heisman Trophy with the caption, “No one can take from you what God has for you.”
Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel also weighed in on social media, thanking the Heisman Trust for making the right decision.
Why did Reggie Bush relinquish his Heisman Trophy?
In 2010, Reggie Bush was forced to surrender his Heisman Trophy after an NCAA investigation revealed that he had received impermissible benefits during his time at USC. The repercussions were severe, with USC facing sanctions such as a postseason ban, vacated wins, and scholarship reductions.
Nevertheless, he maintained his innocence and asserted that he was not paid to play football at USC. He then filed a lawsuit against the organization, alleging defamation and seeking justice for the tarnishing of his reputation.
Following the implementation of new rules permitting athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness, Bush even launched a campaign to reclaim his Heisman Trophy. After years of advocacy and legal battles, his efforts have finally paid off.
In addition to reclaiming his Heisman Trophy, the former Denver Broncos player will also be extended an invitation to future Heisman Trophy ceremonies. Furthermore, USC will receive a replica trophy to commemorate Bush’s historic achievement.
