RFEF executives demand Luis Rubiales to resign over Jenni Hermoso kiss scandal at 2023 Women’s World Cup

A chain of unpleasant events has followed Luis Rubiales’ inappropriate ‘kiss-gate’ saga. Upon his refusal to resign his office as the FA President, FIFA has suspended the man, the RFEF has demanded his resignation, and the Spanish prosecutors have also launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.

Following these incidents, Rubiales’ mother stands with her son, maintaining that the punishments against her son were all ‘inhumane’. One of his cousins also stated that Luis has a ‘good heart’ and that not all that happened was nothing but an honest mistake.

RFEF executives ask Luis Rubiales to quit over kissing incident at Women’s World Cup

During the recently concluded Women’s World Cup, Luis Rubiales was observed kissing and engaging in inappropriate touching with Jenni Hermoso, Spain’s leading goal scorer. When questioned about his actions afterwards, he initially dismissed the incident by labelling his critics as ‘idiots’. However, he eventually issued an apology for his inappropriate behaviour.

When speaking about the incident, Jenni Hermoso said he has a great relationship with Rubiales and implied that his intentions were not to harass her but further asserted that “I did not like it.”

Luis Rubiales

Following several criticisms of Luis Rubiales’ act, a press release was issued requesting a meeting, with the following statement;

“The Royal Spanish Football Federation urgently calls for an Extraordinary General Assembly scheduled for the upcoming Friday, August 25th, commencing at 12 noon, to take place at the Ciudad del Fútbol de las Rozas headquarters.”

In the ‘extraordinary and urgent’ meeting, the regional presidents of the Spanish FA have reached a unanimous consensus that Luis Rubiales, who has steadfastly declined to resign, should step aside. This decision comes after he was placed under provisional suspension by FIFA, the global governing body of football.

According to Dailymail, there was later a meeting of the Commission of Presidents of Regional and Territorial Federations of the RFEF where it was agreed that;

“After the latest events and the unacceptable behaviours that have seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents request that Mr. Luis Rubiales immediately present his resignation as president of the RFEF.”

The RFEF added further that they urge the corresponding bodies to carry out a deep imminent organic restructuring in strategic positions of the federation to allow for a new stage of football management.

Spain prosecutors initiated a preliminary sex abuse investigation on Luis Rubiales

Prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish FA. The investigation stems from an incident in which he allegedly kissed Spain player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips without her consent.

Spain Prosecutors’ investigation started after FIFA suspended Luis Rubiales and RFEF demanded his resignation. The Prosecutor’s Office said it has initiated an investigation against Rubiales because ‘the sexual act was not consented’.

AFP quoted the Spanish national court as saying: ‘Prosecutors from the national court have opened a preliminary investigation to look into the facts, which could constitute an offense of sexual assault’, the statement adding that Hermoso will have the opportunity to submit a lawsuit herself.

Following these events, Rubiales’ mother locked herself inside a church and refused to eat to stop her son’s ‘inhumane’ treatment.

One of Luis Rubiales’ cousins also told Dailymail that their family is ‘heartbroken’ by how the incident has been completely ‘taken out of context’, and his actions were only a mistake.
