After having an illustrious 11-year career in the NFL, Richard Sherman remained connected with his once-lifeline, football, as a sports analyst. Presently, he co-hosts Fox Sports’ “Undisputed” alongside Skip Bayless, Keyshawn Johnson, and Michael Irvin, while also providing analysis for Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football.”
Amidst his success in his post-NFL career as a sports analyst, the former Seattle Seahawks star found himself back in the headlines due to legal trouble.
Why did Richard Sherman get arrested?
Richard Sherman was taken into custody in the early hours of Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence, as reported by the Washington State Patrol at approximately 3:48 a.m. The arrest is expected to result in him remaining in jail throughout the weekend.
According to records, Sherman, who bet against Lamar Jackson, was officially booked into the King County Jail around 4:51 a.m. on Saturday. As of now, bail has not been set, largely due to the timing of his booking over the weekend.
Details surrounding the circumstances of Sherman’s arrest have not been disclosed by law enforcement officials. Requests for comments regarding the incident were directed to a representative listed on his social media profiles and to a legal representative who has previously represented him.
The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced that Sherman is anticipated to appear in court for a hearing scheduled for Monday.
The three-time All-Pro cornerback notably played for the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017. He contributed significantly to the team’s Super Bowl victory in the 2013 season. Following his tenure with the Seahawks, he embarked on the next phase of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for three seasons. In 2021, he concluded his professional journey with a final season as part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before announcing his retirement.
As one of the premier defensive players of his era, he was honored with a selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s in 2020.
Did Richard Sherman have legal troubles previously?
Richard Sherman had previously faced legal consequences stemming from a DUI incident in July 2021 in Redmond, Washington. It came after he crashed his SUV in a construction zone and attempted to enter his in-laws’ residence.
In 2022, Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to the incident, as well as a criminal infraction for speeding in a roadway construction area, per USA Today.
The former Bucs player later expressed remorse in a social media statement issued in 2021, acknowledging the gravity of his behavior.
“I am deeply remorseful for my actions. … I behaved in a way I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted,” he wrote.
During a news conference after the arrest, the former Super Bowl-winning cornerback shared positive changes in his life resulting from the incident.
“Some help, some therapies, some tools that I didn’t have before to address some things that you kind of let stack up in your mind. You never have time to address them. It’s not the right moment. It really forced me to step back and go ask for help and get the help I need and to not be afraid, to be proud to ask.”
In a span of just under a year, he found himself entangled in legal issues once again.
