The Atlanta Falcons’ front office has spoken out about their decision to draft Michael Penix Jr. During the draft broadcast, general manager Terry Fontenot was seen discussing the selection with team owner Arthur Blank. He later elaborated on the decision in a post-draft press conference.

Fontenot mentioned the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise, particularly when it comes to acquiring talent at the quarterback position.

“If you believe in a quarterback, you have to take him. And if he sits for four or five years, that’s a great problem to have because we’re doing so well at that position. So, it’s as simple as, if you see a guy you believe in at that position, you have to take him,” Fontenot said via CBS Sports.

Head coach Raheem Morris drew parallels to successful models employed by the Green Bay Packers in this regard. The Packers drafted Jordan Love to let him learn behind Aaron Rodgers. The gamble proved successful as Love proved him to be a franchise quarterback last season.

“The Green Bay model was something we talked about. It proved to be right last year. Hopefully we’ll be right with them,” Morris said.

Michael Penix Jr. enters the Falcons organization with an impressive collegiate resume. Following a transfer from Indiana, the signal-caller led the Huskies to notable successes on the field. His accolades include being the FBS leader in passing yards in 2022, winning the Maxwell Award, and finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2023 despite struggling with injuries.
