Manchester United’s iconic two-decade-long dominance in Europe brought countless glories to the club, especially with the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm and an elite set of players from across Europe and the globe forming an invincible team.
Icons like Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand graced Old Trafford during that era. The English duo stood out as the best players in their positions during their time together. Recently, the Manchester United defender reminisced about a funny incident involving Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.
Ferdinand reminds fans of hilarious behind-the-scenes incident
Wayne Rooney, the former England international, was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2022 for his immense contributions. Over his illustrious 20-year professional career, he played for two of the biggest EPL clubs, Everton and Manchester United.
Currently, Rooney is working on his managerial career. He was appointed in charge of EFL Championship side Birmingham City FC in October, following his departure from the MLS club DC United.
The former English international spent 13 seasons at Old Trafford, claiming the title of the club’s all-time top scorer by netting 253 goals in 559 appearances. Recently, Ferdinand retweeted a tweet from 2011 made by Rooney, recounting a hilarious incident from the pre-season USA tour via a tweet from the team bus.
The Red Devil team bus erupted with speculation about who had caused it when one of the players sneakily farted. Rio, tweeting about the incident, blamed Johnny Evans, writing: “Wow, someone’s letting off some lively farts. My money’s on Jonny Evans.” However, Evans denied the allegation.
While Evans quickly pointed to Wayne Rooney in his defense. The forward tweeted, “Can’t believe me and Jonny are getting the blame for farting when Michael Owen is sat wafting and grinning,” as he believed it was Owen due to his suspicious laughs. However, it was never found out who was the culprit.
Ferdinand named Rooney his ‘worst teammate’
Despite playing together for a decade, Rio Ferdinand labeled Wayne Rooney as the worst teammate at Manchester United. These two English legends have played monumental roles, sharing the pitch both for the club and the England national team.
Ferdinand said, “The worst teammate I probably had the most arguments with Wayne Rooney, to be honest with you. Never came to blows, it was on the pitch, we never argued in training, it was just match day, we probably argued once every two or three games, effing and blinding, screaming at each other because I wanted more from him.”
Ferdinand is acclaimed as one of the best English defenders of all time, especially for his pairing with the Serbian Nemanja Vidic to form an unstoppable defensive partnership that played a crucial role in the Red Devils’ substantial success during his stay.
