Despite his apparent slip from elite football, Jose Mourinho remains one of the most successful coaches in the history of the sport. His pedigree in the game is unmatched, and his ability to win titles is unparalleled. Due to the success he has achieved at the highest level, he’s often been linked with a national team job for Portugal or Brazil.
With Ancelotti’s U-turn on the Brazil national team, all eyes moved to Jose Mourinho as the next best option, but the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager has now provided an update on the rumors, claiming neither he nor his agent received a call on the matter.
Jose Mourinho talks on Brazil NT head coach rumors
Jose Mourinho may no longer be the manager he was a few years ago when he was delivering trophies for Inter, Real Madrid, and Chelsea consistently. However, his experience still makes him one of the best around, and it’s no surprise that he’s been linked with the Brazil national team job after talks with Ancelotti failed.
The legendary Italian coach had been expected to take up the role at the end of this current season after his contract at Real Madrid expired. Some reports even suggested that Ancelotti had signed a secret contract with the Samba Boys to be their next head coach.
Unfortunately for Neymar and co., the Italian boss has made a U-turn to sign a new contract at Real Madrid that will keep him in the Spanish capital until at least 2025.
With Ancelotti out of the picture, rumors have begun putting the spotlight on Jose Mourinho, but the serial-winning manager has quickly put them to bed.
“No one has called me or my agent from Brazil to become the new head coach of the Selecao,” Jose Mourinho was quoted saying, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Roma’s performance under Jose Mourinho this season
Roma have been underwhelming this season despite adding some big names to their ranks, including Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku, who betrayed Inter Milan to play under Jose Mourinho again after their last stint together at Manchester United.
Mourinho’s men sit seventh on the Serie A table with just 28 points from 18 games this season. They’ve lost six and drawn four, which leaves them 5 points off automatic UCL qualification and some 18 points off first placed Inter Milan.
Jose Mourinho has been blamed for losing his golden touch in the past few years, and this continues to be the case as he seems to be incapable of motivating his players to mount a serious title challenge in the league.
Although he landed the inaugural Europe Conference League two seasons ago and got into the final of the Europa League last season, Mourinho’s disappointing form in the league is alarming, and the sooner he considers leaving for an international role like the one he’s been linked with at Brazil, the better for his reputation.
Despite his team’s poor season, Mourinho showed a touch of class when he disrupted an old friend’s press conference on Christmas day to congratulate him on reaching the final of a domestic competition.
