Russell Wilson is likely headed out of the Steelers with Justin Fields poised to take over as the team’s QB1

Justin Fields likely anticipated the uncertainty surrounding his tenure with the Chicago Bears well before the season concluded. Despite the vocal support of Bears fans, the team decided to trade him to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As Fields begins anew as a backup quarterback in Pittsburgh, there is speculation that he may ultimately secure the starting QB1 position, especially with the sincere backing of a former Bears teammate.

Justin Fields may start for the Steelers if Russell Wilson doesn’t perform

The Pittsburgh Steelers sent shockwaves through the football community with their acquisition of Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears, a move that came shortly after they secured Russell Wilson from the Denver Broncos. Although Fields was initially reported to be Wilson’s backup, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has revealed a possible outcome in which Wilson might be released should his performance falter during training camp.

Schefter also highlighted the lack of commitment or loyalty towards either quarterback, stating that the Steelers didn’t invest heavily in either acquisition.

“There’s no commitment, obligation, loyalty to any of these guys. They didn’t pay very much for either one of them. I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him, Russell Wilson, during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season,” Schefter said on NFL Live.

Both Fields and Wilson had commendable performances in the 2023 season. Fields, who started all 13 games for the Bears, boasted a completion rate of over 61% and accumulated 2,562 passing yards, along with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

The QB situation in Denver is causing quite a stir, leaving many uncertain about what the future holds. Despite respectable statistics, including a 66.4% completion rate and 3,070 yards over 15 starts, Wilson found himself sidelined as patience waned.\

The ensuing quarterback controversy signals a heated contest ahead. Next season, both Wilson and the incumbent starter will confront significant pressure to excel, with the prospect of departure from the Broncos looming for the one who falls short. This quarterback duel not only has implications for Denver’s season but could also be crucial in redefining Wilson’s professional journey.

Cole Kmet dismisses his plans after hearing Justin Fields trade news

Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend plans for a vibrant celebration in Chicago were altered after receiving a call from Bears coach Matt Eberflus.

During an appearance on the “CHGO Bears Podcast,” Kmet shared that the combination of the call and developments regarding his teammate Justin Fields prompted him to opt for a quieter evening at home.

“I was planning to hit the city and go out, but then I got a call from Flus and the people with the Bears, and decided to stay in after the news with Justin. Obviously, really upsetting that it came to that, and where it was at that moment, but you kind of felt like the writing was on the wall with that,” he said, per Pro Football Talk.

Amid the buzz surrounding the Bears as a potential landing spot for USC’s Caleb Williams, the quarterback himself has expressed openness to joining the team. With speculation rife, the possibility of Williams donning the Bears jersey remains on the cards.

Kmet expressed openness to the idea, citing the team’s infrastructure as a strong foundation for a rookie quarterback.

“What a great opportunity for a young kid to come in here with an infrastructure in place and be ready to go win football games from the get-go.”

Nevertheless, there’s a word of caution from Coach Deion Sanders, who warned Williams against joining the Bears due to Chicago’s notorious weather conditions.

Fields’ future is now hanging in the air in Pittsburgh.  Now, it will remain to be seen if the USC star can secure his job in Chicago.
