Sadiq Khan bolsters electoral campaign with WrestleMania in London pledge

With the London Mayoral election right around the corner, Sadiq Khan has cracked the code just at the right time to increase his appeal to the voters. The current Mayor of London will be in the running for his third term since being selected in 2016 and there is no better way to entice wrestling-loving voters than WrestleMania.

As the notion of WrestleMania in London is gathering force thanks to Cody Rhodes, Sadiq Khan now joins the party. In a pledge for the upcoming election, the 53-year-old declared, “I believe that London has the potential to host the first international WrestleMania.”

After John Cena first brought it up back in 2023 at the Money In The Bank PLE in London, many fans were on board with the idea. With the recent success of Clash At The Castle in Wales, Backlash in Puerto Rico, MITB in London, and Elimination Chamber in Australia, there’s little doubt about the imminent success of overseas PLEs.

With the 2024 Backlash coming up next month in France, WWE’s expansion on foreign soil will continue, but there’s a major question mark over WrestleMania going anywhere else than North America.

WrestleMania to remain in North America for now

While Sadiq Khan’s pledge might be tempting for a lot of wrestling lovers in the UK, Nick Khan has already rained that parade. After AEW All In was held in London, the attendance of the event showed WWE the potential of a sell-out crowd, but Nick and Co. had other ideas.

During the World Congress of Sports convention, WWE President shed some light on the Stamford-based company’s plans regarding WrestleMania in the future. He said, “We sat down together a few years ago and decided, so the big five premium live events… should be in the United States or Canada. All of the other events, the goal is to have them from international locations.”

Along with the plans to keep WrestleMania America exclusive, WWE is also reportedly considering shaking up the schedule for the biggest event of the promotion.
