Sammy Guevara was suspended by AEW due to his conduct during his No Disqualification match with former WWE star Jeff Hardy on the February 16 episode of AEW Rampage.
During the match, which was taped on February 14, Hardy suffered a broken nose after Guevara’s leg accidentally hit him in the face during a botched Shooting Star Press move. Unfortunately, concussion protocol was not followed after the botched move, which led to Guevara hitting Hardy with the GTH for the finish.
Why did AEW suspend Sammy Guevara
After news of Guevara’s suspension broke, many fans expressed sympathy for him and questioned the reasons behind his suspension. Initially, the referee and AEW’s medical team were blamed for not stopping the match if Hardy was in concussion protocol.
According to an update by Dave Meltzer of the “Wrestling Observer,” Sammy Guevara was instructed to pin Hardy after the failed Shooting Star Press, but he chose to go ahead with his GTH finishing move. It remains unclear why the match was not stopped immediately by the referee or AEW’s medical team.
However, during the February 24 edition of Collision, Guevara lost his next match against Powerhouse Hobbs in another No Disqualification Match. It’s worth mentioning that Jeff Hardy has been absent from the ring since the Rampage match due to a broken nose. Currently, he is undergoing medical tests to determine his recovery progress.
Sammy Guevara’s previous suspensions
Sammy Guevara started his wrestling career by enrolling in Booker T’s wrestling school in 2010. For the next nine years, he mainly worked on independent wrestling circuits. In 2019, AEW hired him as one of their first signings, which turned out to be his big break.
He made his debut for the promotion during their inaugural pay-per-view event, Double or Nothing. Following that, he became a part of Chris Jericho‘s Inner Circle faction during the first episode of Dynamite. Since then, he has been prominently featured and has won the TNT Championship multiple times.
In 2016, Sammy Guevara made an inappropriate comment about Sasha Banks during a podcast. Recently, All Elite Wrestling has decided to take action against Guevara for his past comments. Guevara apologized for his actions, and Banks confirmed that she had spoken to him about the situation.
As a result, AEW suspended their rising star without pay in 2020 when the topic was getting heated. However, he has agreed to undergo sensitivity training, and they will revisit his status when he has completed the training.
