In a run to bolster their offensive lineup, the Seattle Seahawks paved the way for DK Metcalf to start his NFL career in 2019. The Seahawks focused on Metcalf’s strengths, as they believed he might be a generational wide receiver, yet the receiver might have different intentions to assist his team, joining his teammate Jamal Adams.
In almost all week’s play apart from his football prowess, Metcalf let the NFL world witness his aggressiveness on the field, forcing him to swallow multiple penalties. In spite of these punishments, the receiver is adamant not to play in a professional and friendly manner.
DK Metcalf insists his style won’t change despite penalties
The college stars used to enter the NFL world with a vow to adhering to all the personal conduct policies of the league as the authorities are much cautious about the health of their players. Amid all of them, DK Metcalf is seemingly much different as he already garnered wide attention from the football world due to his on-field violence.
In spite of being one of the most penalized receivers in the league this season, Metcalf remains steadfast in his approach, emphasizing that he won’t compromise on his intensity. Most interestingly the receiver harbors a belief that football is a game of violence, hence his way of play should not bring any harm for his team.
“I’m just going to leave that up to everybody else. I don’t feel like I was a problem or I need to make progress in a certain area. Football is a violent sport and it’s my one opportunity to be violent on game day, so I’m just going to continue to do that,” he said.
Metcalf’s aggressiveness gradually has been becoming a major headache for the Seahawks as Seahawks’ Pete Carroll claimed before their player’s statement. Instead of defending Metcalf, the team’s head coach Carroll himself mentioned their vet receiver as a “very aggressive” player while expressing disappointment over his bold acts.
“He’s getting called. He knows. He’s got to clean it up and we have to make sure that we’re aware of how they’re calling stuff. He’s a very aggressive player and very physical and it stands out and he draws attention because of that. We’ve got to be cleaner. He knows it and he’s got to get it done.”
As Metcalf was asked to convey his opinion on Carroll’s words for him, the athlete presented his as usual daunting appearance of being unwilling to take personal conduct policies seriously. Rather he adamantly urged his way of playing as the perfect one that he uttered before.
“I’m not going to shy away because he put a penalty board on the screen. I’m going to continue to be me.”
Though he had accepted his guilt after the first penalty, this time the receiver chose not to bow down his head.
How many NFL penalties has DK Metcalf acquired this season?
After six weeks of the season, DK Metcalf already has brought five penalties for his team which began since the start of the new season. In their Week 1 game, Metcalf was spotted exchanging words with the Los Angeles Rams’ bench. Later on in the match, he aggressively hit the Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, leading him to digest two fines totaling nearly $22,000.
Most recently, he was called for unnecessary roughness after Cincinnati’s Cam Taylor-Britt was flagged for it during his team’s Sunday 17–13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Metcalf’s penalties showed his level of aggressiveness on the field that has been a nightmare for his team in spite of his good playmaking abilities. ESPN reported that the receiver’s total number of penalties has surpassed any other receiver in the league.
“He has been flagged 10 times for either taunting, unsportsmanlike conduct, unnecessary roughness or disqualification, the most in the NFL since he made his debut in 2019. His 28 total penalties in that span are five more than any other receiver,” the report read.
Along with DK Metcalf, the Seahawks squad also faced flak for their 39 accepted penalties, which is tied for tenth place, and their 49 total penalties this season, which is tied for sixth.
