The NFL often springs up controversial events and full-blown fiascos that take the attention away from the game we love. When this happens, the audience attention usually shifts directly to the aftermath of the event, especially with the advent of social media, where news spreads like wildfire.
That is what happened with the Buffalo Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott as he found himself neck deep in trouble for some statements that he made four years ago.
Sean McDermott apologized for his 9/11 remarks in 2019
In a recent post-game interview, Sean McDermott was seen apologizing for some of the comments that he made about the infamous and horrifying 9/11 attacks in New York. In order to instill confidence in his side, the 49-year-old equated the group of terrorists to a well-functioning team and asked his players to learn how the group orchestrated the terror attack.
McDermott apologized for his comments by saying, “Not only was 9/11 a horrific event in our country’s history, but a day that I lost a good family friend. As I mentioned to the team then that I regretted and apologized for me not going a good enough job of communicating my point, I’m going to do the same with the team today.”
“So if there’s anyone new, they understand how important that is to me and my family because it’s an important event, a horrific event in our history,” he added.
McDermott is now in his seventh year as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. He has worked towards taking the team back to their storied past by stitching together a couple of successful campaigns. However, his team’s performance this year has come under scrutiny as the Bills are all but out of contention to qualify for the playoffs.
What did Sean McDermott say about 9/11?
The original incident dates back to about four years, when Sean McDermott, in an attempt to emphasize the importance of togetherness, address the 9/11 hijackers in a locker room speech.
The 49-year-old is cited in an article stating, “the hijackers as a group of people who were able to get on the same page to orchestrate attacks to perfection.”
The inappropriate reference was not reported until last Thursday and the HC has now apologized for failing to communicate properly to his players. This particular comment and its aftermath has sent the NFL community into a rage-filled tirade about the incident.
Some comments include, “I don’t believe anything he says, unfortunately. He speaks in generalities and that indicates something isn’t quite there.” While some others talked about how this is being brought up by the media in the midst of abysmal performances from the Buffalo Bills.
One user said, “Seems like this article is a hit piece. Why drop this now? Why not wait until the season is over? I’ve been critical of McDermott and his coaching but this is a nasty distraction, right when the team seems to have found something.”
