If you think the great Michael Jordan has a gambling problem and was too careless when betting on coin flips, you might reconsider your view of how crazy these retired NBA stars can get. The Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal recently revealed on his podcast that he used to bet thousands of dollars on the Maury show.

Shaq was doing a regular episode of “The Big Podcast” along with his co-host Adam Lefkoe when he interrupted an ad-read of General Insurance to tell a crazy story.

Shaquille O’Neal told the viewers about the time when he used to bet on who the father would be on the popular Maury Show. The bets would exceed thousands of dollars which left Lefkoe stunned upon hearing it.

“Every morning at 10:00 AM we would wake up with thousands of dollars and we would watch the Maury Povich Show. We would make bets on who the father was… Every day we would watch it and let them talk and then we would pause it. Then we pulled that money out ‘I bet you a thousand that he is not the father’ so that was my thing,” said Shaq narrating the incident.

Shaq’s history with General insurance

Shaquille O’Neal is a great businessman who has built an empire worth $400 million but he once had a great reaction when he got to know that $250,000 was missing from one of his businesses. A major part of his success goes to the brands that he decided to endorse. He has a huge following and because of his popularity, he has signed a lot of endorsement deals throughout his career, continuing to endorse a lot of products and brands even after retirement. One of Shaq’s oldest endorsement deals is with General Insurance.

Shaquille O’Neal’s reason for endorsing General Insurance is rooted in both the Maury Show and his days as a college student. When Shaq was a student who relied on “Pell Grants” he went to buy a car, a Bronco which was worth $1,500.

Upon his purchase, he learned that he needed to get insurance along with his car if he wanted to drive it. He was devastated when the insurance plans did not fit his budget and he went to ask for his money back. The salesman suggested General Insurance to Shaq and the future NBA star got to know about the company.

During the Maury Show, General Insurance used to run ads. The jingle of their ads stuck with Shaq, and when they approached him for an offer, he accepted. He also liked that the company used to offer cheap insurance which could be affordable by anyone.

“The reason I do commercials for The General now is that they took care of me when I was young, but it is also an affordable insurance. It is a quality insurance company, just like the other companies. But we decide we are not overcharging people,” said Shaq about his reason for doing commercials with General Insurance.
