Sheamus thanks John Cena for his maiden WWE title win in 2009

WWE superstar Sheamus has credited John Cena for his first world title win in the company. Sheamus has been a part of WWE for 18 years and has won a total of four world titles, which include three WWE championships and one World Heavyweight Championship.

The Celtic Warrior hasn’t participated in a match since August of last year because of an injury he suffered during his last fight against Edge, just before he left for AEW. However, there are signs now that he may be getting ready to make his comeback soon.

Sheamus credits John Cena for his maiden title win

Sheamus revealed that plans changed on the day of his first world title match against Cena, and it was largely due to Cena’s input that he was able to win the table match. Sheamus won the title once again a year later, this time in a fatal four-way match against Cena, Randy Orton, and Edge.

In 2012, he won the World Heavyweight Championship from Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 28. He also had one last run with the WWE Championship in 2015, where he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to defeat Roman Reigns.

The former WWE Champion was a guest on “Virgin Media Sports Stories.” Initially, he was supposed to lose the WWE Championship match at the TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match in 2009.

“Up until that day, I was losing that match, and then things changed. Cena had a lot to do with it. Cena had a lot to do with what happened that day,” said Sheamus.

Sheamus also mentioned that Cena believed he deserved the push and that the leader of Cenation thought Sheamus was a good partner to work with.

“Also, this is someone I can do business with, someone who’s a believable foe to John Cena, which is what John needed,” said the Irish star. “Every good babyface or hero needs a good villain, and he saw that in me. People did not like me. People hated me,” said Sheamus.

Sheamus closing on WWE return

As the 2024 Royal Rumble approaches, WWE is going all out to create excitement for the first event of The Road to WrestleMania. While the recent returns of CM Punk and Randy Orton have added depth to the roster, several notable names are still absent from television. The most prominent among them is former World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus.

The last time we saw the Celtic Warrior on television was when he lost to Edge, also known as Adam Copeland, in his farewell match on the August 18 episode of SmackDown. He has been recovering from a shoulder injury since then.

However, a recent report by Dave Meltzer from the “Wrestling Observer Newsletter” has shed some light on his return timeline. According to the report, Sheamus is expected to return to television within the next few weeks.

It was rumored that the Irishman would team up with Butch to fight Pretty Deadly. However, Butch and Tyler Bate formed The British Strong Style instead on the New Year’s Revolution edition of SmackDown. Sheamus won’t be returning alone, as Xavier Woods will also be returning around the same time. Xavier has been out of action since the November 27 edition of Monday Night Raw.
