Sir Bobby Charlton is one of the greatest players in English football and in the history of Manchester United. The legendary English soccer star passed away peacefully two days ago. Tributes and condolences flowed in for the player, with many professionals of the game joining in.
Today, his funeral was held, and many expected to come to pay their respects to one of the heroes of the country. As he gave everything to the club, it was expected he would be fully respected by their owners, but it seems that is not the case.
Why did Glazers decide against attending Sir Bobby Charlton’s funeral?
Sir Bobby Charlton’s funeral took place today at the Manchester Cathedral, with thousands of people present, including many Manchester United professionals of past and present. Charlton is one of the club’s best-ever professionals, having played more than 750 times for them. He was also a director of the club until the year 2020, when he stepped down after being diagnosed with dementia.
But it seems that the current owners of the club had no intention of paying their respects to such an individual. As reported by GOAL, no individuals from the Glazer family attended the funeral. They are one of the most hated families among the United fanbase and are long dissatisfied with their way of running the club, even flying a banner against them. A year long takeover situation has still not seen an end, which has been a source of disappointment for the United faithful.
This is why they have decided to not go to the funeral, as they believe it will add a negative connotation to the legend’s farewell. They believe fans may attack them verbally during the funeral if they attend. The decision came after long discussions with the senior officials, and if there was to be a change, it could have been Joel Glazer who attends.
