Birmingham City is the latest English club to be acquired by an American superstar, much like Wrexham, which is currently owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Just as Wrexham garnered significant attention in the American soccer community last season, Tom Brady’s association with Birmingham City has generated a new level of excitement for the English club in the United States.
Ironically, the football club hired the recently-released Wayne Rooney as its new manager. Rooney left his role as DC United’s manager in the MLS last weekend, and it didn’t take long before he signed with Birmingham and shared his aspirations about taking the English club to the Premier League.
Wayne Rooney, Tom Brady set sight on Birmingham City’s EPL promotion
Wayne Rooney recently signed on as Birmingham City’s new manager and has big ambitions for the Championship club. After agreeing to leave DC United on a mutual agreement, Tom Brady’s new English club quickly snapped up Wayne Rooney as their new manager, making it the former England captain’s second managerial spell on English soil after he took charge of Derby County from 2020 to 2022.
“I want to be successful, it’s clear this club wants to be successful, and everything we spoke about really was very similar,” Rooney confidently said. “That’s the goal – for the club, for myself, is to get this club back to the Premier League, of course.
“The Premier League is where we want to get to. It’s an ambition of mine, one of the club’s, and we’re putting everything in place to make sure we do that in the near future,” he added.
Soccer fans make fun of Wayne Rooney, Tom Brady’s EPL ambitions
With Birmingham City sitting sixth on the Championship table, a Premier League return is not far-fetched. However, fans think with Rooney’s experience as a manager, he may be dreaming too big to want to achieve Premier League promotion in his first season at the club.
Birmingham City last played in the Premier League in 2011, and a return to the English top flight may be possible with Tom Brady’s new investment in the club. However, some fans doubt Wayne Roney is the man to make the club achieve this feat.
“Only relegations in his CV, but he wants to take Birmingham to the Premier League. Lol,” a fan said on Twitter.
“They hired Rooney and think they won’t be relegated,” another person said, accompanying the post with some crying emojis.
