Evan Ferguson is the latest name to be linked with a possible move to Chelsea as the Blues look to continue their spending spree next summer. Chelsea have struggled this season despite outspending every other team last summer and even bringing in a new coach, Mauricio Pochettino to lead the team to glory.
For all the money Chelsea spent on new players, they refused to sign a striker, which has affected their season, as they’ve struggled to score goals. They now look to bring in Evan Ferguson from Brighton, and the Seagulls are prepared to charge a premium for their wunderkind just as they did with Caicedo a few months ago.
Chelsea is interested in loaning Evan Ferguson
According to GOAL, Chelsea have spent around $1.2 billion on transfer fees for players and managers since Todd Boehly took over the club in 2022. That’s an outlandish amount of money for a club that has nothing to show for it, at least not immediately.
For all the money thrown around on new players, Chelsea have only managed to bring in an inexperienced Nicholas Jackson as an orthodox striker from Villareal last summer. As things stand, the Senegalese is not the kind of player that would thrive at the London club.
Chelsea currently sits ninth on the Premier League table this season, having played more than half of the total games and scoring just 35 goals, underscoring the club’s necessity to acquire a proficient striker. Pochettino and Chelsea have redirected their focus to Brighton’s Evan Ferguson.
The Irish star has managed to score six Premier League goals this season despite serving as a substitute behind Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro in the team’s pecking order. Chelsea is reportedly exploring the option of bringing in Evan Ferguson on loan for the remainder of the season. However, dealing with Brighton, they anticipate challenges in reaching an agreement, as the club is known for holding out for the highest possible fee.
Brighton demands high price for Evan Ferguson
Brighton have been dubbed the “best-run club” in England after their recent profits made from transfers in and out of the club. According to Daily Mail, the Seagulls have made £164 million in profits on transfers in the last three seasons.
The club sold Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for £115 million and bought him for only £4 million two years ago. This highlights how difficult it is to buy players from Brighton, and they’ve reportedly placed a huge £100 million on Evan Ferguson.
The 19-year-old is in high demand, and clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea are lining up to submit offers for him in the summer. However, any deal with Brighton will include a high transfer fee, as we’ve seen the Seagulls do in recent outgoing transfers of Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Ben White to Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively.
£100 million seems like a lot of money for the 19-year-old Evan Ferguson, who hasn’t scored double figures of Premier League goals in a single season, but that’s the kind of business the Seagulls love to do.
