Lionel Messi is perhaps the biggest name in the world of soccer, and his move to the MLS has increased his global reach by quite some number, as proven by Sporting Kansas City’s recent announcement. While the move itself was shocking, considering he had the chance to return to his boyhood club Barcelona, Messi’s arrival in the MLS has opened up new dimensions in the US soccer scene.
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are preparing for the new MLS season that’s supposed to kickstart next month. In preparation for the new season, Sporting Kansas City have made a huge announcement to move their tie with Inter Miami to a bigger stadium to accommodate a big crowd for the game.
Sporting Kansas City moves MLS game vs Inter Miami to Arrowhead Stadium
Lionel Messi is gearing up for the new MLS season, and this time, he’ll be leading Inter Miami’s attacking line with former Barcelona teammate and good friend Luis Suarez. The David Beckham-owned franchise will kickstart their new season with a game against Real Salt Lake later next month, but that’s not even what’s been making rounds on the internet.
Sporting Kansas City will host Inter Miami in April, and they’ve begun making preparations to welcome the greatest soccer player in history to their home. In the light of recent demands to see Lionel Messi in action, Kansas City have moved the game to a much bigger stadium and the match will now be played at the Arrowhead Stadium, which can take up to 76,000 people.
“This match has generated an unprecedented amount of interest from fans since Major League Soccer released our schedule less than three weeks ago,” the club announced via their president and CEO Jake Reid yesterday.
“We believe this will be the biggest event in Kansas City this spring, and we are proud to partner with Arrowhead Events to provide an incredible experience for our fans and our team. The opportunity to host this match, which is set to be Lionel Messi’s first MLS match in the Midwest, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is especially exciting as our region prepares to host Copa America matches this summer and FIFA World Cup matches in 2026,” he added.
MLS fans react to Sporting Kansas City’s location move
Sporting Kansas City’s decision to move their MLS game with Inter Miami to a bigger stadium because of Argentine captain Lionel Messi has caught the attention of many on social media, who have praised the club for the move.
“I became an MLS fan after the 2010 Kansas City Wizards match vs Manchester United at Arrowhead. If done right, this can boost the support for Sporting KC to a new level,” a fan wrote on Twitter.
The Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City is known for hosting NFL games, so one puzzled fan asked how it would be possible to fit a soccer field inside the stadium.
“How are you going to fit a soccer field in there?”, another fan asked.
Whatever the case is, Kansas City is about to host a massive match, thanks to Lionel Messi’s international reach.
