Luka Doncic scaling the MVP ladder and the Mavs climbing up to 5th spot in the Western Conference is no coincidence. Doncic’s purple patch powered the Dallas side into play-off contention and given their form, they could’ve gone 8-games unbeaten, but that was not the case.
On Tuesday night, the Mavs faced the Warriors, pitting Doncic against Stephen Curry. The 36-year-old not only took the dub home, but he also bested the MVP contender twice on the same night.
WATCH: Luka Doncic, Steph Curry have epic pre-game battle
A footage of Tuesday night’s clash between the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks went viral. The video showed Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic having a half-court shooting contest during the pre-game warm-up.
The duo missed a shot each on their first attempt. Doncic’s second shot also bounced off the rim, but Curry’s measured shot found the basket, settling the game. The Slovenian was seen protesting about Curry’s starting position for the winning shot, but the winner was already decided, handing Curry his first win over Doncic on the night.
After that, the real game began. Doncic couldn’t help but explode with another 30-point triple-double, including 12 rebounds and 11 assists. But a motivated Warriors team spoiled his night as the San Francisco team took the game by a 100-104 scoreline.
Points for the Warriors came from almost everyone, with Curry scoring 13, Klay Thompson and Chris Paul both scoring 14, Moses Moody chipping in with 12. Draymond Green, a man who had a lot to prove following his last ejection, contributed 11 points along with a vital block in the dying moments of the game. Though Andrew Wiggins topped them all with his 23 points. For Dallas, apart from Doncic’s 30, the source of considerable points was Kyrie Irving with 27 and PJ Washington’s 20.
Despite two back-to-back Ls from Stephen Curry on the night, it should be of no surprise that Doncic will keep his opponent in the highest of regards. It showed when the 25-year-old talked about another basketball sensation, Caitlin Clark.
Luka Doncic reveals Stephen Curry’s female counterpart
During a pre-game interview, Luka Doncic was asked about the college basketball sensation Caitlin Clark. After receiving jaw-dropping offer from Ice Cube and leading Iowa to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament, the soon-to-be WNBA player became the talk of the town. Luka Doncic boarded the hype train as well.
“The women’s Steph Curry. She can shoot it better than me,” said a humble Doncic when asked about her heroics against LSU. The Slovenian guard not only praised Caitlin for her tremendous sharpshooting ability but also showed his admiration for Stephen Curry’s shooting game. So, when he got into the half-court shooting contest against the Warriors guard, Luka knew what he was signing up for.
With a mega contract on the horizon for Luka Doncic, the Mavs fans can only hope this game was just a bump on the road before the play-offs begin.
