Steve McMichael health update: reviewing latest clinical condition on the Bears’ great

A member of the 1985 Super Bowl championship team Chicago Bears legendary player Steve McMichael is undergoing a critical life-threatening condition for several days.

McMichael played professionally for 15 seasons before retiring in 1999, between 1981 to 1993, he spent 13 years with the Bears, making him a beloved member of the team. So many franchise fans are quite worried about his recent potentially fatal ailments.

After receiving a diagnosis with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s illness, in 2021, the retired player has been unable to communicate or feed himself due to the increasing loss of motor neurons that govern voluntary muscles. He went unresponsive on Thursday night and was taken to the hospital.

He was brought to the ICU almost right away to begin receiving intravenous antibiotics to treat his sepsis. His wife Misty Michael asked his supporters to remember him in their prayers when it was announced that his health had worsened last week,

“He (McMichael) needs to see himself enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Please pray for him to get through this. It means everything to us. Everybody knows, especially in the NFL world, that he deserves it, that his stats have always been there.”

Fortunately, his wife informed the media on Saturday that the sepsis was over, though he is still battling pneumonia and will need to be in the ICU for a few more days to hopefully recover from the infection for good,

“Steve will be in the ICU for a few more days on IV antibiotics to clear this infection. He also has some fluid in his lungs which he is being treated for as well. He’s as feisty as ever. Our Mongo is back! Please keep the prayers coming.”

The 65-year-old was listed as one of 12 applicants for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2024 senior, coach, and contributor semifinalists in a recent press release. He participated in a franchise-record 191 straight contests and is ranked second all-time in sacks for the Bears with 92.5, just behind Richard Dent.

The two-time Pro Bowler was also selected to the first team and second team of the NFL All-Pro teams twice and three times, respectively, additionally in 2019, authors Don Pierson and Dan Pompei ranked him as the 19th-best player in Bear’s history.

As soon as news broke that the legend’s health was getting better, some of his fans reportedly flocked to the hospital to see him. After the initial scare, things appear to be looking better for the former legend.
