“That was so freaking cool”: Ex-NXT champ Carmelo Hayes recalls being awestruck during the encounter with WWE legend The Undertaker

Carmelo Hayes is undoubtedly one of the most talented wrestlers on the NXT roster. He has held the NXT North American Championship title twice and has also been crowned the NXT Champion once. In addition to this, he was the last NXT Cruiserweight Champion. It is expected that he will make his WWE debut on the main roster in the coming year.

Interestingly, Hayes was the lucky superstar who got to share the ring with The Undertaker during his first appearance in WWE NXT. Recently, the former NXT Champion shared his candid reaction to that unforgettable moment.

Carmelo Hayes reflects on working with Undertaker

On October 10, 2023, WWE Legend The Undertaker made his televised NXT debut, where he worked with Carmelo Hayes. Recently, reflecting on his experience, Hayes shared his thoughts on interacting with The Deadman.

The same night, NXT and AEW Dynamite went head-to-head, and NXT showcased a lot of talented wrestlers. In the main event, Melo faced off against Bron Breakker, with John Cena accompanying him in his corner. After the match, The Phenom made a shocking appearance, attacking Breakker and embracing Hayes.

During a recent interview on the “INSIGHT” show with Chris Van Vliet, Carmelo Hayes expressed that working with The Undertaker was like a dream come true. He couldn’t believe his luck.

“It’s funny; a lot of people kept hitting me up the day after and that night. I almost couldn’t believe that it happened. But there was that moment where you’re like, ‘Look, I’m a pro and I’m going to be in this moment and I understand the assignment.’ And then there was a moment where I was a little kid, and I’m like, ‘Shoot, this is freaking cool, man,” said Carmelo Hayes.

He also added, “This is really cool.’ The whole thing with ‘Taker at the end, I didn’t know that was going to happen. I didn’t know what to do. I just kind of like, Let me just walk back with him. And he walked me through the whole thing, with the pose and everything. I was just sitting there like a kid. I remember walking back through, and I was like, ‘That was so freaking cool,’ and he just patted me on the back. It was a great moment. Just a cool experience and something I’ll never forget.”

What is next for Carmelo Hayes after the NXT title loss?

NXT Halloween Havoc, a special two-night event on WWE NXT, culminated last night with a series of thrilling matches. The main event of the night was the NXT Championship match between Carmelo Hayes, the challenger, and Ilja Dragunov, the champion. This was the third time these two wrestlers had faced each other. In their first encounter, Hayes won, but in the second, Dragunov defeated Hayes and became the new NXT Champion.

During a Fatal 4-way match between Baron Corbin, Bron Breakker, Carmerlo Hayes, and Trick Williams, Williams was mysteriously taken out just before the match started. As a result, he was unable to compete and was taken to a local medical facility. Hayes took his friend’s place and won the match, earning the chance to face Dragunov. The match between Carmelo Hayes and The Mad Dragon was tough and evenly matched. NXT commentator Vic Joseph described it as a hard-hitting affair. As Hayes was about to win, Trick Williams made a surprise return, causing a minor distraction that allowed Dragunov to win the match.

After suffering a defeat, the former NXT Champion took to Twitter to reveal that he had bigger issues that needed to be addressed first. “If I’m guilty for anything, it’s showing TF out. Not a champ tonight, unfortunately, but bigger issues need to be handled… #NXTHalloweeHavoc,” Carmelo Hayes tweeted.
