The Sting is one of the most iconic and influential wrestlers of all time. He started his career in 1985 with the WCW and has made an impact on almost all of the wrestling promotions, including WWE.
As Sting is confirmed to retire from wresting after the AEW Revolution in mid-2024, honoring him with the lifetime achievement award has made his retirement a memorable one.
The Sting receives award for Lifetime achievement
PWI’s official Twitter account announced that The Sting has been presented with the Stanley Weston Award for Lifetime Achievement in Pro Wrestling, which is their magazine’s highest honor. The award recognizes the wrestlers who have made significant contributions to the industry and have had a lasting impact on the fans and the culture of wrestling.
Sting started his wrestling career in 1985 and rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the face of WCW. He had memorable feuds and matches with Ric Flair, Lex Luger, Vader, Cactus Jack, and The Four Horsemen.
He also faced Hollywood Hogan at Starrcade 1997, where he won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. He stayed in WCW for more than 25 years and joined TNA in 2003, after the closure of WCW.
Sting officially announced his retirement from pro wrestling in November 2023 by saying, “My very first match with AEW was Revolution 2021 and my very last match will be Revolution 2024.” PWI’s gesture to Sting is being highly praised by wrestling fans on social media and it truly justifies his dedication to wrestling.
Opponents for Sting’s retirement match teased on AEW Dynamite
In the main event of today’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Sting and Darby Allin faced Callis Family’s Powerhouse Hobbs and Konosuke Takeshita in a tag team match. Sting and Allin emerged victorious and Sting was interviewed by Tony Schiavone along with the Nature boy, Ric Flair, who made his AEW appearance last year.
After the match, Sting was confronted by Matt and Nick Jackson, the Young Bucks who made their appearance in the ring, staring towards Sting and Allen. They made their return to AEW Dynamite after many months and issued a challenge to face Sting in his final match at the AEW Revolution.
Although certain fans had anticipated a one-on-one match between Sting and Allin at the AEW Revolution, it appears that their partnership will continue for some more time. Sting’s retirement match will be a historic and emotional event, finally ending his 30-year wrestling career as The Stinger.
