Andy Reid admits to using the janitor’s idea for a successful score

Andy Reid began his coaching career with the Green Bay Packers as an offensive coordinator before taking over as the Chiefs’ head coach in 2013. The HC recently made an appearance on the Green Light Podcast, which is hosted by retired NFL defensive lineman Chris Long, and recounted a crazy anecdote about his time as the assistant coach for the Packers.

As Chris questioned the head coach about the claims that he used to hire people to come up with creative concepts, Andy disclosed that he once stole offensive ideas from a janitor in Green Bay. According to the HC, in order to come up with fresh strategies to use effectively in a game, coaches occasionally need to consult with individuals apart from players and other coaches.

“Yeah. I took one from a janitor one time at Green Bay… It was a mom-and-pop group that cleaned our facility forever. And then they worked game day. And this guy kept telling me, ‘I’ve got this play for you.’ He kept telling me this over and over.”

Reid probably saw the game differently, but he completely changed his opinion upon realizing the potential in the janitor’s plan. They ended up winning that game.

“Finally, I said, ‘Here’s a card. Draw up the play.’ And he (did). I go, ‘Dang, that’s pretty good.'”

The Chief’s offensive genius is presently fifth all-time in victories, after Don Shula, George Halas, Bill Belichick, and Tom Landry, with a winning record of 247-138-1.
