When the discussion is about the most illustrious quarterbacks in the NFL, Tom Brady will surely top everyone’s favorite list. From fans and analysts to players, the majority will surely label him as the undisputed GOAT of the league.
Following a phenomenal two-decade-long career that is adorned with multiple titles and accolades, Brady undoubtedly deserves the love and recognition. However, little did anyone know that Brady himself never liked to be called the greatest NFL player, and he himself dropped the truth bomb once.
Super Bowl champ Brady admits discomfort with GOAT title
As the Pats secured an incredible victory over the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII in 2019, Brady was being labeled as the NFL GOAT by many fans and pundits. However, during an interview with Michael Strahan of ABC News back in 2019, he raised the eyebrows of fans by revealing that he actually abhors the title.
“I don’t even like that..It makes me cringe. It makes me cringe,” he said.
Normal people get driven by positive words about them, but Tom Terrific is different from others in this notion. He provided his reasons behind hating the title saying he would become more optimistic if someone criticized his caliber as it would lead him to push himself more to prove the critics wrong.
“I wish you would say you’re trash. You’re too old. You’re too slow. You can’t get it done no more, and I’ll say ‘Thank you very much. I’ll prove you wrong’.’’
The 46-year-old revealed how he always used to criticize his own performance to put more effort into the upcoming days.
“The personal criticism, I mean I think I’ll walk off the practice field and be like … ‘That was the worst day, you know, like get your mind right. Sports have always brought that out in me.”
The ex-NFL star carried on the discussion, saying he never came to the highlight of his college football career. Tom Terrific also mentioned how he slipped down to be selected as the 199th overall pick by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft and said the beginning of his professional football career was never like a bed of roses.

After defeating the Rams in 2019, the California Cool became the first player in NFL history to win six Lombardi trophies. He earlier tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Haley as the only athlete to have five Super Bowl titles, and the team’s head coach Bill Belichick joined George Halas and Curly Lambeau as the only head coaches with six Lombardi trophies.
Brady also won another championship title with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after closing his chapter in New England. Before hanging up his cleats for the second time in February this year, he had always been the icon that every team needed. From helping his fellow teammates grow their careers to providing financial flexibility to his teams to pay other veterans on the roster, the three-time NFL MVP is second to none.
Though the legend teased the fans with comeback rumors recently, he is not going to think of a U-turn, surely. Nevertheless, his contribution to the football field will always remain vivid in fan’s hearts.
