Transfer News: PSG eye Napoli star Victor Osimhen as Kylian Mbappe replacement

The future of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe has been the most discussed transfer saga within the soccer community in recent years. The timely question has been whether he will continue his time with the Parisians or seek an aspirational move to Spain in the summer.

Now, It has been confirmed that Mbappe will no longer be playing for the Ligue 1 champions starting next season. Consequently, the club has initiated a search for suitable candidates to fill the substantial void that the Frenchman will leave.

Victor Osimhen expected to replace Kylian Mbappe at PSG

PSG has been exploring options for who could assume Kylian Mbappe’s pivotal role at Parc des Princes. According to earlier reports, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and AC Milan’s Rafael Leão have been shortlisted by the French club as potential replacements for Kylian Mbappe.

The French champions have also developed a keen interest in £111 million-rated Nigerian international striker Victor Osimhen, as reported by The Athletic. His impressive performance with Serie A club Napoli made him the most sought-after forward amongst the top Premier League clubs, with Chelsea and Arsenal on the radar for a summer move.

The 24-year-old striker, after spending one season in France with Lille, transferred to Napoli in Italy for a record-breaking fee of €80 million. He spearheaded their historic Serie A title-winning campaign and is considered a direct replacement for Kylian Mbappé, whose contract is due to expire this summer.

Since arriving in Naples, Osimhen has scored 67 goals in 119 appearances for the Italian outfit. In the 2022–23 season, he netted a sensational 26 goals, finishing as the league’s top scorer, and was awarded the African Player of the Year 2023 accolade.

Kylian Mbappe reportedly confirms PSG departure

Kylian Mbappé is set to leave Parc des Princes at the end of the season as a free agent. He has informed the club of his decision to end his seven-year tenure with PSG. His contract will expire in the summer, and he has consistently declined offers for renewal. It is highly anticipated that he will sign for Real Madrid.

The 25-year-old joined the club in 2018 and quickly established himself as one of the world’s best players. He has won Ligue 1 five times, three French Super Cups, and was part of the team that finished as runners-up in the UEFA Champions League during the 2019/20 campaign. 

On an individual level, Mbappé has been the top scorer in the French league for five seasons and has become the highest goalscorer in the club’s history, with 243 goals and 105 assists in 290 appearances.
