Anyone who claims Jeremie Frimpong is the best right-back or right-wing-back in world football right now has every right to do so. Bayer Leverkusen are defying the odds this season by going toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich, and Frimpong is right at the heart of that incredible upset. At the end of the season, the Dutchman will be lifting the Bundesliga title, creating something historic with Xabi Alonso’s side.
With all the hype surrounding the former Celtic defender, he won’t likely remain at the German side for another season. Despite Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at the club for at least one more season, interest in Jeremie Frimpong is growing, and it’s very unlikely the German side will manage to tie him down longer than this season, as both Manchester clubs are circling him like a shark.
Jeremie Frimpong under transfer radar for Manchester giants
Jeremie Frimpong is leading Xabi Alonso’s team from the back this season, pushing the club to an unlikely title triumph in the Bundesliga. He’s an integral part of the team that hasn’t lost a game at all this season, making them the only club in Europe’s top five leagues to remain unbeaten this season. This has caused several people to speculate how top European clubs may come to cherry-pick some of Leverkusen’s best players this summer transfer window.
Manchester United and Manchester City are two of the leading clubs in the race to sign the Leverkusen right-back. For people who don’t know, Frimpong spent his entire youth career playing for Manchester City, a club he joined at the age of nine and played for until 2019, when he left England to sign professionally for Scottish side Celtic.
With Kyle Walker reaching his twilight years and Rico Lewis more comfortable playing as a midfielder, a move for their former academy player can’t be ruled out, considering how he’s turned himself into arguably the best right-back in the world at the moment.
Manchester United could also do with another quality right-back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka being mooted for a move away from the club this summer. Diogo Dalot is having a great season, but there’s a need for competition in the team, and that position is one of the main things the new ownership is looking into this summer.
Jeremie Frimpong’s contribution to Leverkusen’s success this season
It’s super incredible what Jeremie Frimpong is doing at Bayern Munich this season. He signed for the German side in the winter transfer window in 2021 for an undisclosed fee, with the German club managing to tie him down on a four-year-deal, which he has since extended until 2028, making any deal to pry him away from the club very complicated.
However, on personal terms, he’s been incredible, helping Leverkusen to an unlikely title charge in the Bundesliga and a run in this season’s Europa League. He’s been a regular fixture for Bayern Leverkusen this season, making a total of 34 appearances, scoring 11 goals, and registering 11 assists in all competitions.
No team has managed to beat Leverkusen this season, which is a testament to how solid they can also be defensively, thanks to Jeremie Frimpong’s versatility and tactical awareness.
