The Premier League titans Liverpool are formidable challengers to the treble-winning Manchester City for the league trophy. Their recent clash was a significant assertion from the Reds, demonstrating a dominating performance against the reigning champions. Despite not securing the victory, they had to settle for a draw.
One of their standout players against the Citizens in the game was Luis Diaz, the Colombian star who transferred to Anfield from Porto in the January 2022 window for a €47 million fee. Recently, the forward has attracted significant interest from La Liga champion Barcelona.
Liverpool put hefty price tag on Barcelona target Luis Diaz
Barcelona have reignited their interest in Luis Diaz and is keen to acquire the services of the Colombian international in the summer. Even though Liverpool has deemed him non-tradable and not for sale, the winger has been a key part of the club’s long-term plans.
According to a report by the Colombian media outlet El Heraldo, the Premier League club is open to considering selling their 27-year-old winger for a hefty price tag that could fall around €120 to €140 million at the end of the current campaign, despite him having three seasons left on his contract, until 2027.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta has met with the former Porto forward’s agent, Carlos Van Strahlen, to discuss the possibility of a potential move to Catalonia. Diaz’s representatives have made the Barca chief aware of the release clause in his Liverpool contract, which he signed in 2022.
However, the club’s financial position might not make it feasible to land Luis Diaz at a price tag of over €100 million. If they somehow manage to bring the Colombian to Camp Nou, it would mark their third high-profile signing from Anfield, following the significant transfers of Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho.
Luis Diaz costs Liverpool against Manchester City with woeful finishing
Since his arrival, Luis Diaz has been a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s regiment. Even though this season he faced personal off-field issues with his father’s kidnapping in Colombia, he has managed to overcome this hurdle. The winger has bagged 11 goals and five assists so far this season.
In their recent title-deciding fixture against Manchester City, the 27-year-old was a live wire in the Reds’ attack, constantly threatening the flanks of the visitors. However, Diaz’s finishing let down his exceptional chance creation and successful dribbling, along with a controversial call from the match referee to deny a potential penalty.
