Frenkie de Jong is arguably one of the best players in the world. The Dutch rose to fame during his breakout season with Eredivisie giants AFC Ajax Amsterdam in 2019. He was voted the Midfielder of the Tournament for his performance in the UEFA Champions League 2018-19 season.
Clubs such as Manchester United and PSG sought after De Jong following his illustrious spell at Ajax. However, he eventually chose to move to Spain to don the Barcelona colors. Fast forward to 2024, and the English side remains keen on acquiring his services, and the player himself is open to the offers.
Frankie de Jong reportedly open to Barcelona exit
Barcelona star midfielder Frankie de Jong arrived at Camp Nou in 2019 for a €75 million fee, signing a long-term, five-year contract. His arrival was met with great expectations, but the outcome has not been as anticipated. Lately, he has been linked with a move to the Premier League.
Despite the club’s Sporting Director Deco denying the possibility of selling starters such as Ronald Araujo and Frankie de Jong, recent reports suggest that de Jong is open to considering offers. This comes amid interest from an English club Manchester United, with two years remaining on his contract.
According to reports by Lluis Canut on OnzeTV3, the renowned Catalan journalist has claimed that the former Ajax star is willing to leave the club in the summer window. He is reportedly unhappy with the current state of the club and his long-term future at Blaugrana.
Additionally, the midfielder, who is the highest-paid player at the club with earnings of nearly €25 million annually, is dissatisfied due to delays in wage payments. These delays stem from the club’s financial challenges and constraints related to adhering to Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Manchester United’s previously failed chase of de Jong
Previously, Frenkie de Jong rejected a multi-year offer with a staggering wage from Manchester United for a reunion with his former boss, demonstrating his loyalty to the Catalan club and he even agreed to take a pay cut. Nonetheless, the situation has taken a U-turn now, according to recent speculations.
The 26-year-old has been on the radar of Manchester United, as his former Ajax boss, Erik ten Hag, wants to reunite with him at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Barcelona has been grappling with financial obligations and may be required to offload a few of their star names in the summer.
