Transfer rumours: Marco Reus nearing Dortmund exit after 12-year stint

Marco Reus stands out as one of Germany’s finest midfielders. Over the years he has showcased exceptional skills, pace, vision, and wit. His loyalty, enduring through departures of other big-name players like Lewandowski and Mario Gotze, elevates him to the pinnacle of Dortmund’s best.

Regrettably, reports indicate that this enduring union will conclude at the season’s end, as the veteran midfielder prepares to bid farewell to the club.

Marco Reus reportedly on his way out from BVB

Loyalty is one of the rarest commodities in football, and that’s one thing that stands out about Mario Gotze. You mention names like John Terry, Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, and Ryan Giggs. They all played for their clubs for a long time, and having spent 12 years at Borussia Dortmund, that’s the category Marco Reus belongs to, up there with the elites.

Reus rejoined Borussia Dortmund in 2012 from cross-city rivals Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth €17.8 million. Reus had spent his formative years in the youth team of Dortmund before going out in search of more playing opportunities. He marked his return to the club with a debut goal as Dortmund secured a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, and he hasn’t looked back since that time.

Sadly for Dortmund, who are looking to sign Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal, and its fans, Marco Reus may be on the move at the end of the season, as reports coming out of Germany suggest. The German wants to try something different, and his old club, Borussia Monchengladbach and MLS clubs are keen on signing the Dortmund-born playmaker when his contract expires this summer.

Reus’ BVB career highlights

Marco Reus has been a solid presence wherever he’s asked to play at Dortmund since rejoining the club in 2012. It’s his 12th year at the club, which highlights how loyal he is, despite strong interests in him both at home and abroad during his peak years.

During the course of these 12 years, Reus has made 286 appearances in the Bundesliga for Dortmund, scoring 118 goals. He also has 32 goals in Europe for the Black and Yellow, making him the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in European competitions.

Altogether, Marco Reus has registered 167 goals in 415 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. Although Dortmund have spent the past decade in the shadows of Bayern Munich, Reus has managed to win the DFB-Pokal twice with them in 2017 and 2021.
