UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley does not shy away from controversy, as he is still in hot water for his open relationship with his wife, Danya Gonzalez. Moreover, the Montana native claimed to defeat top professional boxers in a fight on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.
Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, recently converted to Islam and chose the name ‘Abdul Wahid.’ O’Malley recently tweeted about Davis, which drew the attention of hardcore professional boxing fans on X, formerly Twitter.
Boxing fans mock Sean O’Malley
Sean O’Malley won the UFC bantamweight champion from ‘The Funkmaster’ Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 with a second-round TKO. O’Malley’s recent tweet, “I’ll knock out Abdul Wahid,” about Gervonta ‘The Tank’ Davis, which evoked a negative response from the boxing community on social media platform X.
“You’d look worse than Ryan Garcia in there,” commented one fan who presumed that Davis would knockout O’Malley as he did with Ryan Garcia in his latest fight. Garcia had earlier predicted a loss for O’Malley if he fought Davis.
“Nah he only gets knocked out by Devin Haney,” commented another fan who disregarded O’Malley’s skills and insinuated that Devin Haney could knock O’Malley out. For context, Haney is not a power puncher like David and the fan was hinting that O’Malley does not have a good chin.
O’Malley has competed once in boxing and has won that fight via KO. Since then, he has competed only in Mixed Martial Arts. However, he is one of the best strikers in the UFC’s bantamweight division which is filled with a plethora of top strikers.
Details Sean O’Malley’s title defense
Sean O’Malley became a UFC champion in August of 2023 and will have his first title defense in March of 2024. Marlon Vera, the sixth-ranked bantamweight contender, is the first title challenger for ‘Suga’. The fight would be a rematch of UFC 252 which saw Vera winning by TKO after O’Malley got injured after getting kicked on the peroneal nerve.
O’Malley is a fan favorite, and the UFC has big plans for him. It needs to be noted that the UFC uploaded his finish sequence of Aljamain Sterling on YouTube minutes after it happened. Moreover, Vera is coming off a single win, and O’Malley’s desire to fight Vera was what earned the Ecuadorian the opportunity.
Number 2-ranked Merab Dvalishvili is fighting former two-division champion Henry Cejudo at UFC 298. The fight is presumed to be a number one contender one fight as the winner is all but assured a fight with the victor of the UFC 299 main event.
O’Malley also has plans to face other bantamweight like Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov in the future. A fight with a dynamic striker like Sandhagen would be fans’ delight and a fight with Nurmagomedov has the potential to be like Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov II; in the bantamweight division.
