UFC champion Jon Jones takes major U-turn on possible Tom Aspinall bout: “Definitely not off the table”

The UFC is known for delivering exciting fights for fans, and UFC CEO Dana White is always determined to make it possible. However, a potential massive fight between an undisputed champion and interim champion has not been arranged by the UFC due to their other plans.

Nonetheless, fight fans are eager to witness a showdown between the legendary MMA fighter and the rising star in the UFC. It remains uncertain whether fight fans can hope to see the bout between these two top-level heavyweight fighters.

Jon Jones sheds light on potential Tom Aspinall bout

Jon Jones, the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, shed light on his potential fight with interim champion Tom Aspinall in a recent interview with Submission Radio. “As impressive as Tom is, he’s not important enough yet to determine my schedule and my decisions,” Jones remarked when asked about Aspinall constantly calling him out on social media.

Aspinall has been hot on the heels of Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones for a fight but the UFC are not interested in it as they want to make the fight between Jones and Miocic. Nonetheless, Jones did not rule out a fight with Aspinall.

“I can’t say that I’m really going to base whether I continue to fight on how I compete against Stipe, how I heal up from this injury…. But the fight is definitely not off the table,” said Jones on Submission Radio.

“I feel just totally reinvigorated and re-energized just being around all these fans, so I’m like, I can’t just walk away. So, the ball’s rolling in a very positive direction for the career to continue,” Jones further alluded to the potential of his fight with with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.

Jones was originally supposed to defend his heavyweight title against Miocic at UFC 295 but had to withdraw due to injury. In the absence of Jones, the UFC booked an interim heavyweight title fight between Sergei Pavlovich and Aspinall at UFC 295, and Aspinall won by 1st-round knockout.

When will Jon Jones return from injury?

Jon Jones suffered a pectoral injury during the training camp of UFC 295 and subsequently had to do surgery which required a minimum of 8 months of recovery. In addition to the pectoral, Jones also had elbow surgery which had further extended his recovery timeline.

Jones recently revealed that he was offered to be the headliner for UFC 300 but he had to decline due to not being fully recovered. As of now, all signs point to Jones returning to headlining the November PPV in Madison Square Garden or the December PPV in T-Mobile Arena.

UFC has already announced that they will make the fight between Jones and Miocic when Jones comes back from injury. Miocic, the arguable GOAT of the UFC’s heavyweight division, has not fought since UFC 260 in March 2021, when he lost the title to Francis Ngannou.
