Conor McGregor, the biggest superstar of the UFC, is known for his intense patriotic sentiments. His strong roots in Irish patriotism propelled him to global superstardom in the UFC. His controversial fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 had the Ireland vs. Russia angle to it.
Now, in a series of tweets on the social media platform X, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor has bombarded politicians in Ireland. The root cause of his dissatisfaction is a particular law in the Republic of Ireland pertaining to electoral policy.
Conor McGregor blats government’s new policies
Conor McGregor, known for his immense respect for his Irish heritage, is criticizing the government of the Republic of Ireland for a certain law that is, in essence, a threat to its patriotism. McGregor has taken a bold stance against a controversial Irish law, allowing non-residents to vote, which has drawn his ire. His passionate arguments have struck a chord with fans in Ireland and beyond.
“US allows non residents to vote? Visitors can vote? I can fly in now and register a vote in the United States elections? Surely not. However, Ireland’s current government is proposing this. A disgrace! A shame! Hang their heads in shame! #ForAshling #ForIreland”, tweeted McGregor
Mystic Mac sharply criticized an Irish law from 1984 that allows non-residents to vote. It was a recent video from Ireland’s Prime Minister that brought this issue to light. McGregor has used social media to voice his disapproval and even drew comparisons to the US electoral system.
Conor McGregor’s love for his homeland
McGregor’s latest actions and ongoing critiques of the government of his country highlight his role beyond sports. His influences transcend the cultural and political spheres in addition to the sports sphere. There are fans rallying behind him suggesting his growing involvement in Irish politics.
Many athletes have immense success when transitioning to politics. Multiple division champion boxer, Manny Pacquiao is the best example of it. However, McGregor has not yet hinted about that path even though he has criticized the politicians of Ireland on numerous occasions.
“Do not let any irish property be took over unannounced. Evaporate said property. It’s a war”, tweeted McGregor citing the need for the citizens to take up arms to dethrone corrupt politicians. This was followed by another tweet, “Ireland, we are at war.”
McGregor has not fought since UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier since the infamous leg break. Poirier recently hinted interest in fighting the Irishman for a fourth time. Nevertheless, all signs point towards a fight at UFC 300. Even though no official confirmation has been made, Michael Chandler is presumed as his next opponent.
