UFC star Aljamain Sterling once nearly got into a brawl with Floyd Mayweather in the club

Aljamain Sterling ditches his belt and sets out on a new chapter, leaving behind a brutal practice of weight cutting that pushed his body to the limit. This action raises concerns about the real price of winning in the cage by exposing a secret hardship that many fighters undergo.

Early in his UFC career, Sterling encountered boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. at a club. The interaction took an unexpected turn when Mayweather did something that left the UFC fighter feeling disrespected.

When Aljamain Sterling almost fought Floyd Mayweather

Aljamain Sterling once revealed an interaction with Floyd Mayweather Junior on the My Mother’s Basement with Robbie Fox podcast. Mayweather tried to pick up Sterling’s girlfriend at a Palm’s pool party in 2016.

“He sent over his minions to try to pick her up. This was back in like 2016… So, he sent over a guy first, told us, ‘Yeah, we can both come down.'”, said Sterling of the first move made by Mayweather.

“Like, man, I ain’t stupid. Come over there, you guys are gonna try to take her up and try to push me back, and then I’m gonna feel some type of way and be like, ” said Sterling of how he responded to the move. “And uh, he left, came back with the girl, and the girl was like, ‘Yeah, no, really, he said you guys can both come down.'”, Sterling said of what happened after his response.

“I was like, ‘Listen, I know how this scene, this movie goes. You could tell Floyd he’s undefeated in boxing, I’m undefeated in MMA. If we want to figure out what’s the better sport, we could find out today.'”, Sterling said what he told the women sent by Mayweather.

“It was like pointing up to her from all the way down in his little cabana section. I was like, ‘Man, you better stop.'” Sterling further explained what Mayweather did when he saw Sterling’s girlfriend. Cruz is still with Sterling, but not as a girlfriend but as a fiancĆ©e.

Who will Aljamain Sterling fight in UFC 300?

Aljamain Sterling will be making his featherweight debut at UFC 300 against Calvin Kattar, the eighth-ranked contender in the featherweight division. Kattar has not fought since he injured his knee in his fight with Arnold Allen in October 2022. Before that, Kattar lost a close fight to former interim featherweight title challenger Josh Emmet.

Sterling is coming off a TKO loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 292, where he lost his bantamweight title. Before the loss, Sterling was on a nine-fight win streak in the division, which is a UFC bantamweight record. ‘The Funkmaster’ had aspirations to challenge for the featherweight title if victorious at UFC 292, but the loss halted the plan.

If victorious against Kattar, Sterling will be on the short list of contenders at featherweight who could potentially challenge for the featherweight title. Alexander Volkanovski, the current champion, will be putting his title on the line at UFC 298 against Ilia Topuria, the undefeated Georgian fighter.

As of now, Movsar Evloev, Max Holloway, and Josh Emmet are on the list of contenders at featherweight who could be the next challenger. If victorious at UFC 300, Sterling could potentially fight for a number one contender against any of the aforementioned names.
