Sean Strickland, known for his controversial comments, recently directed his onslaught on undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Garry. The middleweight champion is scheduled to fight 2nd ranked Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297 in what is the first PPV of 2024.
Garry will be looking to ascend further in the division at UFC 296 where he will be facing the familiar face of Vicente Luque, his training partner at Kil Cliff MMA. Nevertheless, Strickland’s problem with Garry has nothing to do with MMA but is extremely personal.
Ian Garry threatens to sue Sean Strickland over wife slander
Ian Garry is 26 years old, and his wife, Layla Machado-Garry, is 14 years older than him. However, the most interesting fact about the situation is that her ex-husband, Richard Cullen, lives with them. This is due to him being the Performance Nutritionist for Garry, a role he started working in July of 2021.
Jake Shields, the former UFC title challenger, explained the situation in his X post, even labeling the situation worse than the Logan Paul situation with Nina Agdal. Agdal, who had a string of high-profile relationships before being engaged to Paul was slut shamed by Dillon Danis. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that Layla Machado Garry wrote a book titled ‘How to be a WAG?” in 2012.
UFC middleweight champion, Sean Strickland took to social media to provide his two cents on the situation. “This shit ain’t right, she’s a succubus”, Strickland said in a recent post. Moreover, he urged Garry to leave his wife citing that she is not of a good character due to their shared interaction in New York. Furthermore, he labeled Garry as a victim of his wife who wrote in her book, ‘How to be a WAG?.
However, Garry was not a fan of Strickland’s comments about his wife. Garry conversed with Strickland on Instagram and even threatened the middleweight champion with a defamation lawsuit if Strickland kept on commenting about Layla Machado-Garry. Strickland shared the conversation they had on Instagram with a screenshot of it on his X.
Sean Strickland brutally responds to Ian Garry’s lawsuit threat
Strickland was disappointed with Garry for the way in which he conversed with him. Apparently, Strickland would’ve been proud of the Irishman if he had threatened him with violence. Sean Strickland is notorious for his outspoken remarks, as evidenced by his interviews with female MMA journalists Nina Marie Daniel and Helen Yee.
Strickland’s caption of the screenshot of his conversation with Garry read, “You put a man’s mug shot on a shirt to shame him and then you say you’re going to sue me?!?! Learn how to be a fucking man.. Were you born without a ball sack or did your wife remove them.. coward.. utter fucking coward.”
This is not the first time Strickland has come at odds with a fellow fighter. Belal Muhammad and Strickland recently engaged in a social media feud due to Muhammad’s support for the Palestinian cause. Muhammad, being the son of Palestinian immigrants is very vocal about the Israeli occupation of Palestine and Strickland apparently sides with Israel.
Strickland will be defending his middleweight title for the first time at UFC 297 in what will be the first PPV of 2024. Ian Garry will be looking to keep his undefeated record intact at the final PPV of 2023 against Vicente Luque. Garry last fought at UFC 292 in Boston where he dismantled Neil Magny en route to a dominant unanimous decision victory.
