Victor Wembanyama is regarded as one of the best rookies the league has seen in a long time. Despite initial concerns about his thin frame and outstretched wingspan, many believed he might struggle to settle in the NBA.
However, from the beginning, Wembanyama was determined to prove people wrong, and that’s precisely what he has done. Now, Victor Wembanyama has surpassed NBA legend Michael Jordan with this legendary feat in his rookie season.
Victor Wembanyama surpasses Michael Jordan on unique list
This season, Victor Wembanyama has established himself as one of the generational talents of the league. His extreme height and his knack for the game, together combine to form a superstar who has succeeded in making himself a threat for the opponents.
Often compared to legendary players like Michael Jordan and LeBron James, former players have also expressed their opinion on the Frenchman saying that his ceiling was much higher that current superstars in the league. While he is yet to prove himself in that regard, he is taking all the right steps to greatness, especially with his most recent feat.
The rookie, Victor Wembanyama, has surpassed basketball legend Michael Jordan, becoming the fourth fastest player to reach 1,000 points—a significant achievement for the young talent. This season, Wembanyama has been effortlessly dominant for the Spurs, boasting impressive averages.
With 20.5 points per game, he also contributes 10 rebounds and 3.2 assists, showcasing dynamic basketball skills on both ends of the floor. Additionally, the Spurs rookie leads the league in blocks, averaging 3.2 per game. While Wembanyama is enjoying a stellar season, the San Antonio Spurs are struggling in the league and could potentially secure another lottery pick this year.
Gregg Popovich uses Michael Jordan as example for Wembanyama
With the Spurs on course to have another losing season, legendary basketball coach and head coach Gregg Popovich has asked the San Antonio fraternity to stay calm and composed, assuring them that success would follow soon, through none other than Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs have already shifted their focal point to the next season, towards the next year’s draft in which the team has a high chance of landing another rising superstar, thereby facilitating the process of creating one of the best young super teams, one of the visions of Coach Pop himself.
Urging fans to be patient in the quest for success, the coach reemphasized his stance on the team, implying that great things take time to build and that the fans need to wait. Using the legendary Michael Jordan and one-time champion Nikola Jokic as examples, Pop said, “You know, people’s opinions. … They don’t know, they don’t understand. When they see us draft someone like Victor, everyone knows he’s talented. It is not just about talent. Michael Jordan’s first title came in his seventh year. Nikola Jokic just won his first ring and it took him eight years.”
Popovich also reminded fans that the path to success was a tedious process, saying, “It takes time to build a team. If it were that easy, you’d have a different champion every year. For the last twenty years, we’ve had the same organizations. Our cycle of success has been long, stretching over three decades. At some point, you have to start from scratch. This is where we are today.”
With Popovich set to remain the coach of the Spurs until 2028, and Victor Wembanyama improving with each game, there is no doubt that the team will achieve widespread success in the years to come.
