Vikings’ cut ex-Big Ten QB while Justin Jefferson’s status hangs in the balance

The Minnesota Vikings are sitting in the second spot in the NFC North, behind the Detroit Lions. Though their 5-4 record seems lackluster, wide receiver Justin Jefferson gave his all to the games he appeared in.

The fifth-year option on Jefferson’s rookie deal has been exercised by the Vikings, creating uncertainty regarding his future. Though the receiver’s performance didn’t get affected by his contract situation, it surely did following his injury in week 5 as his game status remained less promising ahead of the team’s upcoming clash against the New Orleans Saints.

Vikings list Jefferson as questionable

The Vikings’ head coach Kevin O’Connell earlier made it clear that they would not rush in forcing Jefferson to resume play until he fully recovered. Letting “one of the most ultra-competitors” continue his play this week against the Saints would “probably be a little aggressive”, O’Connell said days ago.

With the matchup ahead, the Vikings have listed the 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year as “questionable” to play in their injury report, although they didn’t totally rule out his possibility of playing in the campaign. The franchise has time to think about his game status until 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, via NBC Sports.

The receiver sustained the injury during the Vikings’ contest against the Kansas City Chiefs in week 5. He slipped on the turf while attempting to make a cut during a third-down pass deep in the opponent’s territory and was later seen limping to the sideline. The team instantly announced the player as questionable to resume play with the hamstring injury, and since then, he has been taking time to recover.

Ex-Golden Gopher QB Tanner Morgan cut from the Vikings’ practice squad

As Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is done for the season with a season-ending injury, the team is banking on former Arizona Cardinals star Joshua Dobbs for the role. Their rookie signal-caller Jaren Hall is still in concussion protocol after taking a hit in the game against the Atlanta Falcons in week 9.

Meanwhile, the Vikings decided to part ways with Tanner Morgan from their practice squad on Friday, leaving Sean Mannion as the only QB behind Dobbs to throw at practice.

The Minnesota-based franchise earlier signed Morgan into its practice squad on Oct. 5, although he was cut on Oct. 10 after Mannion got enrolled in the roster. They again signed him this week, and now they have once again cut him after some days.

The former Golden Gopher signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent rookie following the 2023 NFL draft, but they cut him out of the preseason. Now, he will again return to the University of Minnesota to continue his role as an offensive analyst.
