The upcoming Netflix series based on the life of Vince McMahon, the wrestling icon and founder of WWE, has been highly anticipated by fans. However, according to professional wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, the show has undergone significant changes since its conception.
Initially, the show was planned to be a documentary that focused on McMahon’s ownership of the company and his journey with the company. However, it has now become a narrative that features unexpected twists and turns that fans might not have expected.
Is Vince McMahon’s Netflix documentary still happening?
During the 2020 Q3 earnings call, WWE announced its collaboration with Netflix to produce a docuseries about the life, career, and controversies of Vince McMahon, the President of TKO Group Holdings. The project promises to be uncensored and revealing.
It was reported in July 2022 that the project about Vince McMahon was canceled, and he announced his retirement in the same month, which became quite infamous. However, just a month later, it was clarified that the project was still under production and that it wouldn’t be too long before fans got to see it. Dave Meltzer, speaking on “Wrestling Observer Radio,” recalled his involvement with the project.
“Today I went to Los Angeles to do a Netflix taping about Vince McMahon. I guess what I can say, because I’m not supposed to say much about it, is that the Netflix series is going to be out sooner than you think. It’s a big freakin’ deal. They’ve interviewed all kinds of people. I was told the most interesting person they’ve interviewed is Vince McMahon,” said Dave Meltzer.
Meltzer mentioned that no aspect of the wrestling powerhouse was left unexamined by the project. A lot has changed for WWE and Vince McMahon since the announcement of the Netflix deal three years ago. Dave Meltzer explained how these changes will be reflected in the project.
“It’s covering the whole life of Vince McMahon. I’ve been asked about every single subject that you can think of regarding Vince McMahon, from childhood to last week, practically. Covered everything. The series, when it started, and how it ended are completely different. When it started, it was just ‘Vince McMahon, the owner of the company’, and now it’s not the owner of the company, and there are all the reasons that he’s not the owner of the company; the payoffs all that stuff happened; they were years into this documentary before all that stuff happened.” said Dave Meltzer.
How much influence will Vince McMahon have on the documentary?
The upcoming Netflix documentary will provide fans with an opportunity to delve into the life of Vince McMahon, the Executive Chairman of WWE. Pro wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer is set to participate in the documentary as an interviewee. In his “Wrestling Observer Newsletter” last October, he gave some insight into the project and revealed how much influence the man on whom the documentary will be based will have.
Meltzer recently revealed what Bill Simmons said during an interview with “Bloomberg Screentime.” Simmons expressed that he believed the documentary was one of the best projects he had ever been a part of. Additionally, Simmons confirmed that while McMahon will have the opportunity to view the completed documentary, he will not have the ability to make any changes to the content.
According to Meltzer, McMahon had requested that the project be honest and engaging. He was informed that the documentary would be a four-part series. However, Simmons suggested that the episode format would be better since there was too much content to fit into a single two-hour movie. If everything goes as planned, the documentary should be released in early 2024.
