Soccer players may be the inspiration and role model for many fans around the world, but we have to remember that they are prone to mistakes. West Ham superstar Kalvin Phillips is the latest soccer star to lose his cool in front of his club’s supporters.
The once energetic player at Leeds United is not the same as he once was. After his arrival at Manchester City, he has not managed to impress at all. Now on loan at West Ham, it seems his career is not going any better, and this has resulted in some frustration for the player.
Kalvin Phillips lashes out at fans with obscene gesture
Kalvin Phillips is the center of a controversy in England after the player flipped the middle finger to a West Ham fan yesterday. As Phillips was leaving the stadium in the team bus, one fan voiced his displeasure by labeling him as ‘useless’. However, the player lost his cool when he entered the bus and showed his middle finger to the player. The incident has gone viral on social media, and has earned Kalvin even more backlash from the fans.
The incident happened after his team lost 4-3 to Newcastle United, despite being ahead for most of the game. In fact, they were leading 3-1 until the introduction of Phillips in the game as a substitute in the 69th minute. Earlier, his teammate Mohammed Kudus also created a stir on social media when his celebration request was denied by a ball boy.

Phillips conceded a penalty to the opposing team, and they would go on to lose the entire game. Fans were understandably angry at the Englishman for costing the game, especially considering they had high hopes from him since his arrival as a loanee in the winter. He has not had good performances for them since his arrival, which further added to their frustrations.
Kalvin Phillips’ West Ham spell turning into nightmare
Kalvin Phillips’ career is not going well at all, from the heights of joining Manchester City and his success with the national team to barely making a significant performance. He was once one of the best players in the Premier League in his position for Leeds United. Phillips had also went all the way with England at the 2020 Euros to the final.
Kalvin Phillips was expected to do even better under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. However, he has not even managed to get ample playing time, with fitness and performance issues hampering him. After it became clear that he won’t get minutes at City, he came to West Ham this January on a loan deal. But even there he has failed to impress, and already earning more criticism.
He has only played 9 games since, with not a single start so far. He has no goal contributions and has also made lots of mistakes, even conceding a goal in a previous match. The 28 year old has also missed England’s squad during the recent international break, and is expected to miss the upcoming Euro tournament as well. It is evident that he is low on confidence, and he needs to work hard to turn around his situation.
Kalvin Phillips will have another chance to impress in the next game for West Ham against Tottenham on Wednesday.
