The new UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall recently came under controversy from the woke media after an interview with Nina Marie Daniele. Daniele, an ex-playboy model, conducts informal interviews with MMA fighters on her YouTube channel, Nina Drama.
The interview was conducted preluding his UFC 295 victory over Sergei Pavlovich but was uploaded on YouTube recently. Apparently, one of the questions that the Brit asked inside the interview was taken out of context and deemed derogatory against women.
Tom Aspinall’s X-rated question to Nina-Marie Daniele
Tom Aspinall is the third UFC champion in the UK following the footsteps of Michael “The Count” Bisping and Leon “Rocky” Edwards. Bisping won the UFC middleweight title at UFC 199 in a massive upset against Luke Rockhold as a short-notice replacement for Chris “All American” Weidman. Edwards won the welterweight title at UFC 278 from the pound-for-pound king Kamaru Usman with a come-from-behind victory in a fifth-round head-kick KO.
During the fight week of UFC 295, Aspinall was interviewed by Nina Marie Daniele. The interview was funny and informal with one of the questions asked by Daniele that of a hypothetical three main team to fend off alien invasion. Aspinall answered the UFC 295 headliners Jiri Prochazka and Alex Periera with the former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
However, the highlight of the interview was one of the questions that Aspinall asked the interviewer. “Have you ever been fingered by an MMA fighter before?”, asked Aspinall.
Daniele replied with a stern “No”.
“What would it take?”, continued Aspinall.
“Are we talking about the same thing?”, a visibly surprised Daniele replied.
This segment circulated widely on X, formerly Twitter, and it painted Aspinall in a bad light. Aspinall is considered to be one of the nicest fighters in the UFC and many were surprised to see someone like Aspinall asking a question that was deemed inappropriate. It also needs to be noted that Daniele is good friends with Sean Strickland, one of the most outspoken fighters in the UFC, and was asked even wilder questions by Strickland.
Nina-Marie Daniele provides context to the fans
The video clip of Tom Aspinall asking an apparent derogatory misogynistic question circulated widely on social media. The MMA community on social media heavily scrutinized the character of Aspinall with respect to the circulated video.
The attention that the video got was substantial and it resulted in a negative image for the new interim heavyweight champion. In order to address the matter, Nina Marie Daniel took to X platform to defend Tom Aspinall. Apparently, the video was taken out of context as they were talking about the wild derogatory questions that she receives on a regular basis on her social media channels.
“I absolutely love Tom Aspinall’s humor! The reason he asked me that crazy question is because we follow each other on IG and sees all the crazy weird questions my followers ask me.”, Daniele posted on her X account.
“@AspinallMMA is funny AF and he didn’t offend me AT ALL! He was trying to get a reaction out of me and he got a good one lol. I asked him some crazy-ass questions too!”, she further added describing his character.
Apparently, the fact that Daniele and Aspinall are American and British respectively caused the sudden commotion in the interview. Nevertheless, Daniele sorted out the problem before it became too controversial. Ironically, Aspinall was not supposed to be at UFC 295. Aspinall got the call after Jon Jones, who was originally supposed to headline UFC 295 against Stipe Miocic, suffered a pectoral injury and withdrew from the fight.
